Yeah, they were trying to make it ambiguous at first to keep the audience guessing whether it was really Giles or The First. Before and after that plot point, he was the usual Giles.

^ I agree. lol For the twist purposes it worked but overall looking back at it, it certainly didn't because of how distant at times they had to make Giles before the audience found out the truth.
