The way Anya was handled was a bit sloppy in S4-S6. Angel and Spike's demon pasts were taken very seriously, and the two's storylines were basically about redemption. But Anya on the other hand, constantly looked back on her demon days fondly and we were supposed to find her reminiscing about it funny. So there was a double standard with her. Not to mention, Xander, who was very anti-demon, looks like a giant hypocrite for starting a relationship with Anya, who was an ex-demon, when he had judged Buffy for her relationship with Angel. Luckily, "Selfless" rectifies this with Buffy and Xander clashing, and Anya finally feeling guilt over her crimes. I had enjoyed Anya very much in S4-S6, but I couldn't help noticing that flaw in her story, and it kept me from really loving her. But "Selfless" came along, finally acknowledging these things and I couldn't have been happier because it showed that the show really took her seriously as a character, instead of just treating her as Xander's quirky, Cordy 2.0 girlfriend.

I know that when you put it like that it makes it seem like Anya got off easy, but the only reason it played out like that for her was because the writers didn't value her character the way they did Angel & Spike. The moment the writers actually decided to take an in depth look at her character, we saw how lost she was & how bad she really felt. It should have happened much sooner - so much wasted potential there.

Yeah, I know. That's why I said I love Selfless so much. To quote myself, "it showed they really took her seriously as a character, instead of just treating as Xander's quirky, Cordy 2.0 girlfriend". And it was great too because Emma knocked it out of the park.

Anya really falls victim to the same thing that Tara did. The writers clearly had things planned for her, but at the same time, they didn't have nearly as much time to use them character-wise as they would have liked to.

Yeah, they kinda got the shaft - on the one hand I understand it, but on the other hand I wish they had found a way to minimize things like the potentials so that the actual main characters of the show could have got more attention.

I think the writers were trying to make us actually care about them so that we'd worry when their lives were in danger.....didn't work though.

Yeah, I think that the majority of us wanted to see closure for a lot of stuff that they didn't address
