I wonder what Alicia would think of the movie at this point
She would keep herself on the minor details, like, Kalinda wasn't trying to have a baby, and she didn't ask for Alicia permission

Ooooh that's a list of classics you have there
There are other classics, but I'm not fond of clichés, which you can find in a lot of musicals..

I know you're going to hate me for this but I'm not a fan of the Sound of Music
Not the best, but I Julie Andrews, the songs and Salzburg, so, etc

I know you're going to hate me more for this: I was in NYC when Julie was doing Victor/Victoria on Broadway and I saw it.
Don't hate you. I'm jealous but happy that you had the good fortune to see and hear her.... Beauty is meant to be shared!

oh yeah, that

Sadly true. I guess it's true of a lot of genres as well but there seems to be a tendency to take shortcuts in musicals.

It was really special. Such a sad thing that she lost her voice because of the show though. What a loss.
Liza was fantastic in it too but it wasn't the same. I'm grateful I got to see her on stage before she started having trouble.

Speaking of which... I know it's not the same as seeing her on stage (and unless someone invents a time machine, well...) but there is a pro-shot of the play that was broadcast in Japan. Are you interested?

I was missing such ian interesting conversation about composers! Shame on me!

Just the lifetime achievement one and it's a shame. I was lucky enough to go to a concert of his in which he played all his best scores. Just amazing. However, The Mission always manages to move me.

Quote:
- John Williams, (surprise uh? the guy's been nominated 45 times for an Oscar. Wonder why? ) and the one that haunts me is Memoirs of a Geisha. Such a fantastic work.
I still haven't watched that movie, but every score of his is great. My fave is the Indiana Jones one though. It is so iconic.

Quote:
- Danny Elfman, he definitely have his own style and the soundtrack for Nightmare Before Xmas certainly bumps him up a few slots but I love his work.

Quote:
Patrick Doyle. And now I know you're going to google him because nobody knows who he is. He worked a lot (and still is working) with Kenneth Brannagh. He WAS nominated for two oscars for Hamlet and Sense & Sensibility but my favorites are Frankenstein and Dead Again because not only are the scores magnificent, they are an integral part of the movies.
I him! I don't know a lot of his work, but he's done a wonderful job with Gosford Park, recreating the right atmosphere and mixing old songs with his original music. I've listened to that CD too many times.

Quote:
- Max Steiner, his scores are still among the most well known ever, even by people who have never seen the movies. I mean who doesn't know the music for Gone with the Wind or Casablanca? The guy was trained by Brahms
I think he composed scores for almost every movie with Bette Davis (Now Voyager ) except All About Eve and that takes us to my #2 guy.
Absolutely fantastic.

Great list! I just love Chicago, both the movie and the music. Kander and Ebb really were an amazing duo.

don't worry about it, it's right here. Not going anywhere

It's hard to play favorites with his scores. They are all amazing. The one from Jaws MADE the movie. The entire score from Star Wars is so universally known that even people who have not seen the movies would recognize it. Same with Indy.

I have not yet seen the movie but I know the music. Doyle's very eclectic but he never misses.

So who are your favorites, Ellie?

I'd really love to be at one of his concerts. It must be amazing!

So who are your favorites, Ellie?
Pretty much the ones you've already mentioned. I like Alexandre Desplat too. He's quite classical at times and I like his use of the piano, but mostly I like the way his music contributes to the atmosphere. It's often very emotional and quite intimistic.
Hans Zimmer is another good one. More epic. But I really loved his work for Inception, specially the way he used Edith Piaf's songs to create his own music.
And I've recently fallen in love with Downton Abbey's music by John Lunn. I've IMDb-ed him and I've seen he's worked mainly for British TV. I should look for more of his work on YT.

As for the movies whose music is pretty much fundamental, the first one that comes to my mind is Dirty Dancing. I love the movie, but maybe I love the soundtrack even more. The screenwriter started to write from her own memories and from the music. I really couldn't imagine other songs there.
Another one if The Boat that Rocked. Great soundtrack!

So I watched three movies since the last time I posted here:
Harry Potter - can't talk about it, i get too emotional. I loved it, I wish they hadn't changed a few things from the book though

Just Go With It - the plane selection of movies was terrible! the movie was the same old thing, i think it's not even worth commenting

Limitless - those people need to choose better movies (and tv shows because they only had Sex and the City and Two and a Half Men). It was cool to see Chuck Charles and Will Tippin together tough

I think I never cried so hard for a movie and I still can't think about it without crying. The first time I saw it I was crying from minute one until I went to bed. at least I watched with a bunch of crazy HP fans so it was normal it was so much fun, everybody screaming and crying together. End of my childhood
(gosh Lupin and Tonks get me everytime)
And the second time I cried a lot too I have to say that
Spoiler:

Quote:
It's been on my list forever. I just keep pushing it back for some reason.
I love it, but it's too well made if that makes sense

Julie Andrews three times I love some of those. And Henry Mancini I haven't seen Fame and Mame

and that's hard to do.
In that vein, the music for Black Swan was also outstanding! Mixing new pieces with the themes for Swan Lake must have been a daunting challenge but Mansell did a great job (like he did with Moon)

that movie! The soundtrack is really great! and I totally agree about Dirty Dancing!

He's just completely unknown by the general public but he makes beautiful music that serves the movies so well

You just HAVE to see Fame. It's a classic for good reasons and although it's very very definitely 80ies there are a lot of themes there that remain very contemporary. It's kinda dark for a musical though. Alan Parker doesn't screw around

I don't hate it. It's just way too sweet and too superficial for me. And the music is great... but it really would have needed a few more songs instead of repeating the same ones over and over.
I must say though that I can't help but at 16 going on 17. The memory of Dame Judy Dench doing it on stage a few years back for a charity event I was attending just cannot be erased from my brain. What a talent

I will I haven't seen many 70's and 80's movie so it's always nice to watch some of those

It is, but I can forgive it because of the role it played in my life and also it's a musical...

I have no idea! What these people think when they write those stuff? I only managed to watch the whole thing because I was stuck in a plane with nothing else to do and Bradley's eyes

Sadly all I could find was a video shot on a screen
It's a DVD, people! At least get the sound through a ripper for **** sake!

People were choking, they were laughing so hard

I think it's a book? but whatever, it was really bad.
There are worse airplane movies to get though. I mean Wayans brothers bad.

I can totally understand. I'm going to watch it again this afternoon. Let's still if I?ll be bawling like a child again. And Lupin and Tonks!

Still on my watchlist, but I'm sure it's great. Swan Lake is already bautiful per se so...

Very dark and, even though it's not on top of my list, it's really great. The TV shows was great too, at least the first 3 seasons.

I keep laughing and laughing everytime I watch it! It's up there with Ian McKellen's Maggie Smith impersonation. However, Judi is a really good singer too. Her version of Send in the Clown, the one she did at the Proms last year, is so wonderful. I get shivers ever time I listen to it.

Ah, last night I watched Easy A. I really suggest it. It's a funny comedy, but not on of those on the stupid side and Emma Stone was great in it. She's got a real potential (I already adored her in Zombieland). The rest of the cast is great as well, specially Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson. Best screen parents ever.

Yup Is quite good! I thought it wasn't gonna be very good, but I still watched it! And totally surprise on how funny it was, really enjoyed it!

It really is and that's why I was surprised by the quality of the score and the way it integrated the themes perfectly. Not an easy task.

hard to believe they were all hooked on coke with all the stuff they had to do but I agree the show completely went down after that. Not really sure what happened.

I know, right? People in the audience were laughing so hard, they were crying! Definitely the highlight of the show.

When Lily told me I should watch it, I thought she had cracked but I was surprised. It's not pretending to be more than it is but there are interesting themes and the acting is pretty good. Emma Stone in particular, knocked me out. I wasn't expecting it. She's really got a quality to her that you don't find in most supposed "actresses" her age.

It's very upbeat and light but there is a lot going on underneath about our society and the way we communicate with each other, especially in the new era of "communication" and "social networking" that actually reduce communication more than it enhances it.

and it's a relief to see them so fun together because they were not fun at all in Blind Date.

I love Easy A. I feel in love with Emma Stone It was really better than i expected and really wasn't like the typical teen comedy.
