OT2 Thread #33: Life After Everwood: Other Addictions (TV Shows, Books, Movies, Music)

credit: Alex

Hi guys! Welcome to the new OT2 thread #33!

This is a second OT thread that focuses on shows, books, movies and music we're now obsessed with since Everwood ended. Important: This thread is focused on promoting in depth discussion.

Bring over your opinions on latest episodes, discuss characters and storylines, books you're reading, movies you're watching, music you're listening to, but please remain cordial, respect one another and refrain yourself from turning this thread into drama land.

Matt, these are the replies to your question from the last thread:

Thanks for the new thread, Betty!

Matt, I'm glad you're starting FNL. I'm almost done with the first season and it's a tremendous show in my humble opinion. You might want to ignore my long, rambling posts until you get through the episodes so I don't spoil you. LOL.

Alex is preparing for a UK Vid Con and she had to do a bunch of vid related things so we decided to watch a double dose of Chuck with commentary tomorrow (though I've already seen last weeks, we just haven't done commentary on it yet) and instead, watch PLL this afternoon. So, we watched PLL and Shelby and I are hitting 1.21/1.22 FNL very soon. Based on all the elements involved my show watching lately has definitely been a juggling act.

Oh it's an incredible episode so I can see why you feel this way. Incredible. Shelby and I watched a few hours ago and I'm still thinking about the episode, how they get to state and the horrible event Tyra endures. The back and forth had me numb from shock and disbelief. It made it that much more powerful, seeing how the football lives on but Tyra is "dying" inside. I have chills just thinking about it. I will get into it more when I write that episode up shortly. That episode was flawless. It was both euphoric and heartbreaking at the same time. Amazing.

Thanks for the tip, Alan! Yes, the feeds for season 1 were sparse. I was already worried about season 2 so thank you for this bit of information.

PLL

Poor Spencer having her parents treat her like she needs psychological help. She is in reality the most sane, intelligent one out of everyone involved. What an irony.

It was so sad how Spencer said she felt scared every day Ian is around. The acting there was so good by Troian. She's really an amazing actress and her acting chops are being shown more and more as the season moves along. She's great. Alex commented on her fabulous acting today the very second she hit the screen in this episode and she's very picky about passing out those compliments.

Emily/Paige:

The whole drowning thing was certainly a turn off for me but I think I slowly started to like them right at the time Emiliy told her they should only just be friends. I loved their scenes prior to that moment but I can understand why Emily said what she said. Emily cannot go back. She is at a different place now and good for her to state as much. Maybe they will find a way to work things out but for right now it makes sense Emily has to keep romance out of the equation.

Spencer/Toby:

They had such great scenes together. You do not beat Spencer at anything and kiss her at the same time without Spencer being quite fond of you. LOL.

Yes, they have a great dynamic, Spencer/Toby, and I look forward to seeing where they go next.

Hanna/Caleb:

I think they had sex way too soon (I'm sure everyone knew I'd make that comment) but I still like them and I believe that despite Caleb making that phone call to Jenna about being out officially from spying on Hanna he has real feelings for her. He screwed up with the spying bit and definitely has to make this wrong a right which he appears to be doing with that phone call to Jenna. This also solves the mystery as to why he couldn't crack Jenna's cell phone. Yes, Caleb, I still like you and I think you're good for Hanna but the Jenna thing was not cool. Make this right like it appears you're doing and I cannot wait for Hanna to come down hard on Jenna next episode which seems to be the case based on the promo. LOL.

Ezra/Aria:

I know I'm hot and cold with them but this episode they weren't too freezing I guess. I mean, I know the creator has made it pretty clear there is a good chance they are endgame so it made sense Aria would finally tell him everything. That was a good move on her part. I still think they are in this make believe world not facing reality but there are moments I like and their last scene together was one of them.

I am not sure what to make of the story Melissa told Spencer about losing the baby before an abortion and that's why this baby means so much to her. I don't know if she's telling the truth or not. I do know Spencer is going to figure it out anyway since she's that awesome. Then again poor Spencer needs to get the stupid cops away from her first. What a horrible situation she's in now while Ian and Melissa should be the ones questioned!

Freaky last scene with the rocking chair and popcorn.

Great episode. Maybe a little too shippy for my taste but overall it still worked. This show is so intriguing. I can hardly wait for next week.

Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy either. And I mean that I know that is said all the time but he truly is one of the most down to earth actors in hollywood such a great guy.

As for it boosting Chucks ratings...not so much we stayed at a 1.7 in the demos and went down slightly in overall viewers. I hate to say it but realistically its not looking good for a S5 this could be it Chucksters lets enjoy it while it lasts.

For sure she owned up to her actions and has tried to move on from them. And yes she definately has issues deeper than whats on the surface she has to work through.

That makes this show all the more spectacular. Wow. I had no idea. I thought I was impressed before this knowledge. Amazing.

Yes, I can totally see that now. The s$it really has hit the fan for her with Jason and how he's currently acting, her father who is nothing short of an moron with the affairs. I really feel sorry for her right now. I'll get into more of this as I write up more episode thoughts, too.

It infuriates me that that they believe this about Spenser..but realistically...you can understand how they might believe that. It would be difficult for them to doubt their son-in-law....epecially since the police believe the accusations are false. So, it's understandable that they'd wonder what's up with Spenser.

I'm really glad that Emily told Paige that they should only be friends. I'm not too crazy about Paige. I don't believe that Emily should jump into a relationship with her just because she is a fellow gay young lady. I don't believe they have much else in common other than the fact that they're both gay....and they are in different places in their lives psychologically, so I don't think they belong together romantically.

I still don't like the two of them together and I don't trust Ezra. Also, it's really unprofessional for him to constantly talk to Aria about another student.

Added thought: I really like Hanna's mom. She is sometimes cold and businesslike...but she is the most approachable/reasonable/understanding mom on the show. It was very nice of her to allow Caleb to come back and stay in the guest room.

Yeah it sucks. We have made it through so much so I will never say never with this show.....but 1.7 is not looking good. NBC sucks right now so thats really the only positive I mean what are they going to keep if not Chuck? But there is always the option to scrape them all and start fresh.

Yeah thats why it feels so natural because the script is more of a guideline they arn't forced to say it word for word...they have the freedom to intepret and play the scene out as the feel necessary.

For sure, you're right. I keep remembering that one episode though (I can't remember which one) where Spencer and her father were talking and he talked very negatively about Ian. You could tell he disliked him. They had the conversation in the family room and he told Spencer to hit the lights on her way up to bed. I can't remember which episode it was. He seemed to dislike him then. What also amazes me is Spencer's mom is a lawyer so you'd think she'd be more actively involved in this situation, trying to figure things out.

But yes, they definitely have to be worried about Spencer, especially since they found out she was romantically linked to Ian.

Agreed. Alex isn't a fan of them either.

Their relationship did come on very quickly. It sort of came out of nowhere and just took off where you're sitting here wondering how it jumped from point A to point D so quickly. I think if they didn't start off so rocky and Paige wasn't so closeted it could have worked but circumstances have put a wedge between them which is making romance unlikely.

Such a good point about him talking to Aria about Jenna! I never picked that up. You are so right. That is entirely unprofessional. I think I was just happy they were not on top of each other this episode.

That's what I don't understand... unless they believe she is the jealous, burned ex who is seeking out revenge? Maybe they suspect all the more because Ian is with her sister? I really don't get it though.

^ THIS. I completely agree with you. Her suspicions about Caleb were right on, too. I don't believe Caleb's a bad guy, he's a little con artist and his personal life has to do with that. But she had mother's intuition about keeping a close eye on him. I also love how she's always wanting to protect Hanna but will not strangle her by being too overprotective either. Like you said she has the right combination that makes a very good mother overall.

That's the thing....this came out of nowhere...well...not really nowhere. It developed from a place of jealousy and rage on the part of Paige....not to mention homophobia. Now...all of a sudden...Paige likes Emily and wants to have a romantic relationship with her? It doesn't make good enough sense to me. Emily shouldn't settle.

Hanna asks "do you have..." and Caleb confirms and that's when they do, as Alan called it, the horizontal mambo. So yeah, I think there was protection.

I was really shocked by the Caleb reveal and kinda wish the promo for next week didn't give it away so fast.

Though I really liked the Em/Paige scenes (loving Paige's hair colour), I'm totally proud of Em for saying what she said. They are in different places right now. (BTW, I have seen the sneak peeks for next week's and oh boy. Don't think it's going to go well.)

Spencer and Toby, they're really something to watch. Their journey all season has been awesome.

I still love Ezra/Aria, but I totally could hear the anti-E/A fans like Betty when Ezra was telling her about Jenna. So unprofessional. Also someone I talk to (on another board here) about PLL threw out the idea about Ezra/Jenna. And um, no. That would be too weird for me.

Well, they had already started to make out and I just rewatched the bit, a little hard to hear. But the whole exchange is:

C: Are you sure?
H: (nods) I'm sure. (beat) Do you have...
C: (nods)
(They resume vertical make out and then transition to the horizontal mambo.)

But I just wanna tell you my opinion, I think you think different, but anyway: I think that shows's are great for let's say 4 or max 5 seasons at best, but after that storylines could get boring and repeatativ and so on. That's the experience I've made with a lot of shows, so I don't think it's necessarily bad for a show to have less episodes, because if you'd give cable shows like Dexter or Breaking Bad more episodes, I think they'd produced more average episodes. Of course I can't say if it's true, if a Mad Men season with 20 episode would not also be the same quality show, but a short season doesn't have to be a bad thing. When you have to much time, writers tend to write boring storylines, cos they have to come up with something. Of course that's all theory, haven't really seen FNL, but just my opinion.

Just one more question: Could you give me a ranking of the seasons? Is the show good from 1-5? That'd be nice to know! I'll decide if I watch season 2 after season 1 I think at the middle of season 1.

I hope not!

Have the ratings ever been in the 1.7 range consistently in past seasons? I'm severely freaked out now.

FNL 1.15

That's so awesome. I knew the directing was unlike anything I've ever seen but had no idea they were so free and natural while filming. That explains the natural feel the episodes have from start to finish. I love it.

One could say Karma is a bit$h but yes, she certainly has had it rough. I think oddly enough this is what she needs to start from scratch. I think she needed a wake up call where she could look herself in the mirror and start living her life on her terms instead of trying to live for others instead. I already see her starting this transition.

No, she really shouldn't and I love how she has evolved so much, too... she even admits to Paige she was in love with Alison and Alison didn't love her back. She falls for Maya who bruises her by blowing her off. Now Paige is closeted but wants to be with her. Emily could have every reason to be insecure and hide with Paige again given her past experiences but she's not. She openly talked about her past with Paige (which is why I loved their conversation on their date) and then decided in the end she couldn't go there romantically with her because of her evolution which made so much sense.

I love how the character of Emily has been written with regards to her sexuality. Brilliant writing, indeed.

Really? PM me the peeks or tag it here?

Yes, Ezra/Jenna wouldn't be good at all. Ezra would definitely need that orange jumpsuit if he went for another student, let alone, Jenna. Lol.

Update on FNL Season 1 Watching

All I have left is the season finale, 1.22.

I will have more comments on that episode as well as a few others hopefully later on today.

And I'm glad to see that my 'horizontal mambo' reference is catching on.

You watch Gossip Girl yet?

His goodbye to Spencer was very cute. It's like he knew she hated that he beat her at Scrabble. It was adorable.
Of course he knew. You could tell it by her change in demeanor when he dropped the 'Goofball' bomb and scored all those points. That clipped tone and tightening of the features is the universal symbol of people who don't like losing at anything.

Thanks to Alex for looking it up I would have never known since we watched online but here it is:
Well, I don't know how it is for everyone else, but ABC Family never shows a preview for the next week's episode when I'm watching, so every week I usually go into the show completely blind.
