Yeah I think the girls that are with him are definitely exchange students, most of the sightings of him in Florence, if not all of the sightings, have come from American girls who are studying in Italy.
I think the, don't show your American pride overseas warning, came after 9/11 and has just kind of stuck with people. Maybe not specifically 9/11 but after the Iraq war started there was a lot of not so great feelings for American's overseas, or at least that was the way it was portrayed in the media.
Taylor has the added bonus of appearing American but the convenient out of the true fact that he is a sweet Canadian and not one of us terrible Americans.
