I think so. She had to be alone and take care of herself early on, so now she's learned to not rely on anyone.

I agree with that completely. That said, I don't think that if she breaks up with Ham she will automatically "choose" Spencer. I think they both need some time alone.

As far as I know, Nicky once intended to write a future fic set one year after the end of season 6, and I think that's still the plan.
I'll try to remember to ask her next time I see her online.
