Martin Scorsese Appreciation #1: Who wants a gold naked bald man anyways?

....with no genitals to boot! (I love Cate Blanchette)

Since this -is- a movie forum, it seems sacrilege to me that Martin Scorsese doesn't have a thread. Mean Streets, The Age of Innocence, Taxi Driver, The Last Temptation of Christ, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Goodfellas, The Last Waltz, Casino, Gangs of New York...all incredible works of art which could only come from one mind. So he doesn't have an Oscar...it's something the Academy should be embarrassed and ashamed of, not Marty.

Anyways, for those not entirely familiar with Marty's work, here's a selected filmography:
  • Who's That Knocking At My Door (1967)
  • Mean Streets (1973)
  • Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974)
  • Taxi Driver (1976)
  • New York, New York (1977)
  • The Last Waltz (1978)
  • Raging Bull (1980)
  • The King of Comedy (1983)
  • After Hours (1985)
  • The Colour of Money (1986)
  • The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
  • Goodfellas (1990)
  • Cape Fear (1991)
  • The Age of Innocence (1993)
  • Casino (1995)
  • Kundun (1997)
  • Gangs of New York (2002)
  • The Aviator (2004)
[/list]
Marty is currently working on the movie The Departed and a Bob Dylan Anthology (which I'm sooo looking forward to).

Thank you for creating this thread Lush!

Martin has been my favourite director since I saw Taxi driver.
He is a brilliant director who loves his films and it shows. His sense of detail is amazing, and it's always an experience, even when he loses the overall grip (GONY).
We know Hollywood doesn't appreciate him saying the excuses like his films are too violent, dark, etc. The main characters aren't too sympatic (as I said in my TA review) you can't really feel for them.

But when you watch a Scorsese movie, you can almost feel like he is there. That's what I like about him. His unique visual imagination.
He is a true genius.

He doesn't have an Oscar. This says everything about it's quality.

Okay i could say more, but I don't want too use all my gunpowder

ETA: I love the title

I think after this years Oscar lost, with Marty 'getting the message' The Departed will be more violent than it was planned
The Academy can screw itself

I disagree, actually. Many of Marty's characters are so dimensional and complex that even when it's the villian I find myself sympathising with them, in some cases even rooting for them over the protoganist. Take Bill the Butcher; between Scorsese's direction, Jay C-ck's writing, and Daniel Day-Lewis's astounding acting the character was in turns funny, violent, insane, intelligent, affectionate, and monstrous...sometimes all at the same time. That speech to Amsterdam by the bed? I remember sitting in the theatre with my brother and at the end of the scene we both turned to each other with looks that said 'Holy f!ck.' I hadn't been so fascinated with a character since watching Travis Bickle for the first time.

Edited because poor Jay C.'s last name isn't FF friendly.

I really didn't like GONY, though I have it on tape but I haven't watch it since it came out.

That's why I said Hollywood uses this excuse among the others I said to snub him from any awards...
They (most of the AMPAS members) don't have a second thought about the characters like us because Marty didn't portray them as manipulatively and attitudinized as for example Eastwood did in M$B.
We have to look further from the surface to feel for these characters.
I hate that I can't express myself so good in English...
As for the Oscars:
He should have gotten it 5 times in my book:
Ordinary people over the amazing, arguably the best Scorsese movie, Raging Bull?? Disgrace
Dances With Wolves can't touch Goodfellas. Kevin freaking Costner has an Oscar and Marty doesn't
Mean Streets wasn't even nominated? What the hell is Sting? Does anybody remember it?
Rocky better then Taxi Driver? Give me a break...and didn't even get a nom in BD and BP? (actually I think Network deserved the win this year. Both Taxi Driver and this film was superior to Rocky)
The Aviator beats MDB in almost every department. But the AMPAS is in love with Clint...

Hi

It's great to see a Scorsese thread.
I was the one saying it wouldn't last long. I hope you all will prove me wrong.

I love all Scorsese's movies except his last two. GONY and "The Aviator" sucked majorly, imo. I guess I don't like him in big epics, with CGI.
I prefer his older movies: Taxi Driver, After Hours, and so on.

I am not sure what to expect from his next movie. The Departed is a remake of one of the best action films I've seen in a while. It's a great Hong Kong film and a pretty recent one. I'm not sure why Marty wanted to remake it. The asian original can hardly be topped by any remake, even a Martin Scorsese remake.

And yeah, the Academy can screw itself.

Oh I must disagree with GONY. I may be a bit biased because DD-L is my favourite actor, watching him onscreen is always a great joy for me. And I'm also Irish and loved to see that part of our history portrayed onscreen. But, with each viewing (3 and half...would be more but I only got so much time) I find it's even more richer in depth and complexity than I had previously thought. It's definately a flawed film, but far from bad imo. I remember Richard Roeper named it his best film of the year even though it wasn't perfect because a flawed Scorsese film is still superior to most masterpieces. Also, a lot of people panned it simply because they had these insanely high expectations because it's Marty and it's his ultimate project, and when it didn't meet those expectations they gave it a bad review. Which is unfair because viewed for what it is, again imo, a flawed masterpiece, it's a brilliant piece of art. Because really, GONY was an art house film in an "epic" disguise.

The Departed...yeah, I'm torn. On the one hand it's kind of annoying when American filmmakers remake great foreign films, but on the other hand I'm definately interested to see how he translate the film into an Irish American culture (I know, I'm a whore for anything Irish).

You may have a point there. I have too big expectations when I see a Marty movie. And it can be hard to live up to those expectations. But it was Marty himself who made me have those expectations. His genius makes me expect a lot from him (a lot more than I expect from other directors).
And that's why GONY disappointed me. It wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. And being a flawed masterpice isn't good enough, for a Scorsese movie. In my mind, a Scorsese movie can't be anything less than a masterpiece. Anything below that is unacceptable.
And I guess I only saw the epic disguise. I totally missed the art house film that GONY was supposed to be.
And why did Marty think it was a good idea to make a movie with an epic disguise? He never did that before and that worked fine. It actually worked much better. His last two "epically disguised" movies didn't work for me.

I also love Daniel Day Lewis. Brilliant actor.

I guess we'll have to wait to see "The Departed". But my expectations are pretty low. I loved the original too much. And the cast they chose for the remake is sort of weird. The actors seem way too young.

Scorsese Dicaprio are a great team. Aviator, Gangs of New York, Departed, Shutter Island and Wolf of Wall Street are all some of the finest movies of recent time! Also, Scorsese is god.
