I love that he is her ally. He respects her ability to make decisions for herself. He understands that it is her life and her choice. He respects her intelligence and her bravery - he's spent over half a millennium watching people run from his brother and this girl is willing to go to him and die. He respects her love for her family and friends. She recognizes that about him and so she trusts him; in this situation, I don't know if she trusts anyone more. When Alaric delivered Klaus' message, she looked to Elijah first.

This is a couple that locks it down. Lay it out, talk it through, negotiate, learn about the other, learn to trust. He got what Damon didn't, and he's only known her for less than two weeks: Elena doesn't want to become a vampire. Elena would become a risk to everyone, even if only for the first little while. She could murder people, like poor sweet Caroline did in the beginning. Elena does not want to murder people, and if she did she would have to live with that forever. Elijah - and Klaus - knew that elixir would work. He offered her more than mere survival, he offered her life. Because he knows: this girl isn't Katherine. She's willing to see this thing through to the end and make the best choice she can. - Black_Betty

Elijah and Elena. I don't even know how I went from finding them interesting to shipping them as AU to hardcore shipping them to considering them my OTP so quickly, but they stole my heart and it doesn't seem likely they'll give it back anytime soon. There's something so special about Elijah and Elena, a unique bond that comes from basically sharing one soul. They don't need to talk to understand each other, they can read each other without even trying. Their relationship started out as an alliance, but it gradually grew into respect and was on the way to becoming friendship when Elijah took off with Klaus (which nothing will convince me was a "betrayal". He walked into this plan fully intending to kill Klaus- until he was given the chance to see his family again. Who says no to that chance?)
Elijah is clearly attracted to Elena- the way he looked at her when he said "a mistake I won't make again" screamed of a man who's trying to convince himself. When he smiled the moment she came back to the Lockwood's I could practically hear his defenses crumble, only to be ruthlessly put up again when she went straight into business mode.

Elena can feel at ease with him - even more so than when she's with Stefan or Damon. Elijah doesn't coddle her, he treats her like an equal, but he doesn't surrender to her either. He challenges her, just like she challenges him. They seek each other out with their eyes when something happens- no matter who else is in the same room with them. They inevitably look at each other first.

It's inevitable. It's undeniable. To the writers of TVD; open your eyes to what you are creating! This is all you! We as fans are drawing out what you provide us with! In the sense of EE becoming a true "item", it doesn't have to happen right now. Though I am bored stiff, I am willing to let the triangle run its course. It poses no threat. Elena will eventually tire of being pulled in 2 directions. No one should have to endure that. But if she settles with one, it won't be stable because this is the Salvatores. They're so damaged from their past they've lost it. I don't understand how this love is supposed to be real to them; it's just something to fill an empty void, which began simply on the fact that Elena looks like Katherine; but that is where it all ends. It's not love, it's obsession. A sick and disturbing obsession. How anyone can find beauty in this eludes me, but perhaps the only reason I say that is because in a sense, I've seen the light. I have a whole new perspective of this fandom, as well as a deeper understanding.

It's better to have EE's relationship build and strengthen over time; instead of rush it just for the fact they have undeniable chemistry. It just comes so naturally. Never forced. It's so spiritually deep and so eloquent. I could go on and on about the amazing beauty of this truly flawless pairing. I have never in my life, being the hopeless romantic that I am, been so passionate about 2 fictional characters. I mean, they're not even real! Yet I am so captivated and enveloped by them because they're so enchanting and exhilarating. Like nothing I have ever seen before. Daniel Gillies' perspectives on their affiliation just make it all even more clearly defined. He's the true heart and soul of this idea. If this is what he feels, than it must hold true. But like I said, you have to surrender to it all. Otherwise, everything just gets distorted and mixed. It becomes one big mess of complicated strands between this ship and that ship. Essentially no one can make you ship a pairing, you have to decide for yourself. And we are all human so everyone sees things different. People will call you out as to being "wrong" because you don't share their views and opinions, like you're supposed to be put to shame. But it's not all so black and white. I feel rather relieved to have stepped away from that mess. TVD is one of the "hype" fandoms and I generally hate hype. But there's some reason I gravitate to it. Those reasons have changed drastically, but it's for the best.

However, in the risk of stereotyping, most people in this fandom don't seem to want to take that because they're loyalty lies with other pairings. I've never really met anyone who truly and honestly loves both Stefan/Elena and Damon/Elena without having one overpower the other. I could be wrong on that account, but that is just from my personal experience in this fandom. We are divided. Individual views are quite one sided, while as a whole there's the choice between one or the other; in the sense of SE or DE. Not really any area between that; unless you believe in crack ships, which I'm not a fan of, really. But all that was until Elijah came along, and offered a brighter outlook, at least for me. And now, Elijah is the only one I fully ship Elena with. These two are truly soulmates. The EE fanbase is so...clean, for the lack of a better word. We're not scarred with a dark and complicated history that came before. There's less baggage, if you will. We have a beautiful harmony amongst ourselves. But that doesn't make it simple. EE is the most appealingly complex relationship in the fandom just because they're more than what's on the surface. You have to get underneath it all and really look at it. And that is the main reason why I ship them. Never have I analyzed a pairing so deeply. I find it so fascinating and intriguing, more so than any other pairing, not just in the VD fandom, but EVER! And believe me, a week before 02x19, I was actually defending Damon/DE. But now, no. No turning back.

Good night Caro (there are Castle nominations at the TWOP awards too, in case you didnt know). I'm off to bed too and probably wont be on all day tomorrow, so I'll just post a super-long one-shot fanfic to make up for it. Elijah and Elena spend the last day together and they say what needs to be said.

And it seemed she was spending her last hours on this earth as a human with him, rather than Stefan, which a surprise to everyone.

"What are you thinking?" he asked, his voice barely above a murmur.

She glanced at him, her eyes filled with conflict and inner turmoil.

"Not much," she admitted, lifting her shoulders in a very half-hearted shrug.

"It's understandable to feel confused and hurt, given your circumstances," he told her, his eyes solely on her. "Damon shouldn't have done what he done, but his intentions were good. You should at least know that."

She nodded, yet wrapped her arms around her thin figure, as if trying to keep herself from falling apart. She wasn't quite ready to talk about the implications of Damon's extremely rash decision, but it was all she could think about. Elijah's presence here had surprised her. She'd merely gone to sit in her car to be alone, half expecting Stefan to follow her, when the passenger door had opened and he'd silently slid in next to her.

"What's the transformation process like?" she asked numbly, mostly as a means of breaking the silence.

Out of the corner of her eyes, she saw him stiffen, the tiniest sliver of surprise visible on his face. She understood why – the question seemed to come from nowhere. He was probably expecting her to avoid the topic altogether, but she couldn't help but feel a morbid sort of curiosity. Stefan would supply her with answers, sure, but she didn't want someone sugar-coating the truth. Elijah had always been straight with her, giving her the truth in harsh but honest doses.

"Painful, but endurable," he told her, staring ahead, his eyes glazing over in (presumably) reminiscence. "The worst part is before you voluntarily take human blood to complete the transaction. Your emotions are high, everything is amplified – noise, emotions, hunger. You can't control yourself, even though you tell yourself you can. Your entire body suddenly feels like it has a mind separate to yours, and it always, always points to blood. Once that's in your system, the rest comes with time. You gradually adjust to your new diet, although the cravings and urges to kill will be with you forever. You just have to find a way to fight it."

He turned his head to look at her. She gently lay her head against the steering wheel, as if willing it to take her somewhere – anywhere. But unless it was the Delorean from Back to the Future, she wasn't really interested in going anywhere.

"Let's go for a drive," he suddenly suggested.

"Where?" she asked, turning her head to stare at him with numb surprise.

"Just this little place I know. I'll tell you where to go."

….

Ten minutes later, they were just by the borders of Mystic Falls, near the woods. Elena felt her heart sink, knowing exactly where they were near.

"I can't," she said, turning to Elijah.

"All that pain and unresolved emotion will follow you, you know," he told her calmly. "I thought perhaps taking a little trip down your memory lane for a change might help you open up. I know there's something you want to say. I may be old-fashioned, but I can read people, determine whether or not they're revealing the entire truth." He saw her question coming. "I don't use compulsion unless I have to."

She nodded, taking a deep breath before getting out of the car. Elijah mirrored her actions and they walked together towards Wickery Bridge. As if on a loop, Elena saw the car crashing into the icy depths over and over, her breath swelling up inside her, exiting her in the form of a deep and heavy sigh.

Elijah's eyes were on hers, his expression, predictably, unreadable. But she could detect the tiniest hint of compassion in his eyes. Somehow that made it easier to go on, even though she would've preferred Stefan to be here, his arms locked around her keeping her close to him.

As they approached the bridge, Elena turned to Elijah, her mind brimming with questions, questions she never thought she'd ever have to know.

"Does it get easier? The cravings for blood?" she asked.

"With time," he assured her. "But every day is a constant battle. But I have a theory that the way people react to being a vampire depends entirely upon their personality. Some take to it better than others."

"How do you think I'll take to it? The cravings?" Elena asked, not entirely sure she wanted to know the answer.

He turned, his eyes scrutinising her. And his answer completely took her by surprise.

"I think you'll be fine," he said calmly. "Because even if you fall off the wagon, you'll be surrounded by people who'll support and protect you."

He walked off, leaving her with a weak smile on her face. She followed him, her eyes dropping instinctively towards the water now gushing underneath her feet. Each step she took – figuratively and literally – felt incredibly difficult to make. The imprints of the past and of the future lay scattered beneath her feet, a tide of blood lingering on the outskirts.

"I heard all about your parents from Jenna," Elijah spoke, an indeterminate emotion entwining with his velvety tones. "Such a tragedy to lose both parents in a single night."

She nodded, unable to speak, her eyes filling with tears.

"Not a day goes by that I don't remember my parents," he continued, his eyes fixated on the river below them. "My father – stubborn, handsome, eyes as dark as the night – and my mother – charming, beautiful, but easily lost."

Elena turned her eyes onto Elijah, incredibly moved by the way he spoke of his parents. Even when he spoke about his brother he seemed to reserve a reminiscent tone, like he still held some scrap of affection for him.

"How did they - ?" she ventured bravely.

"Klaus," Elijah said simply, predicting the end of her question. "He killed every one of my family in blind rage, just because after father discovered Klaus wasn't truly his, he was treated differently." He shrugged, looking unconcerned, though his eyes looked haunted. "He went off the rails not long after that."

"I'm sorry," Elena said honestly, putting her hand on top of his.

He looked at her, giving her the faintest of smiles.

"Thank you," he said simply. "Even after many, many centuries, just hearing someone acknowledge that loss, however long ago it was, means quite a lot, but I digress."

He turned his body so he was completely facing her, and she felt a cold shudder run down her body. Whether it was because of the fate that awaited her, or whether it was just being around Elijah in general, she couldn't really say. She wrapped her arms around herself again as a cold wind picked up.

Almost effortlessly, Elijah had taken off his suit jacket and handed it over to her.

"I couldn't," she began to protest.

"It's getting cold," he said, his tone meaningful. "You should keep warm. That jacket's wasted on me anyway."

And she got the feeling he wasn't really talking about the cold anymore.

….

They walked across Wickery Bridge, their bodies occasionally making contact as they began to cross into woodland territory, where the ground became a little unstable. Elena took in the breeze, the smell of the trees, and all the other little things, knowing she probably wouldn't appreciate them as much when she was a vampire.

She occasionally glanced in Elijah's direction, his face impassive as he observed everything around. Without the suit jacket, he looked remarkably younger, almost as though formality aged him. If he caught her staring, however, he didn't mention anything.

"Is there a reason you're out here with me?" she ventured, looking away, scared to hear the answer.

"Indeed." He caught her eye all the same. "Look, Elena, trust is a two way street. You more than lived up to your word, I know any past misconceptions regarding my intentions was perhaps due to the misguided thoughts of others. I know I've built up a reputation for being merciless, and perhaps that's true to an extent, but that doesn't mean I'm ignorant of the emotions of others."

"Right," she breathed, bobbing her head, secretly marvelling over this personal revelation.

"Truthfully," he continued. "I'm out here with you because we have far more in common than either of us could have predicted."

At her confused look, he proceeded to elaborate.

"We both have lost our parents, both have trusted people we were perhaps wrong to trust, and above all else, we have this undeniable desire to see Klaus dead." He paused for thought. "Maybe if I had been clear with my intentions at the start, perhaps the mistakes we both made could've been prevented."

Elena, however, was following her own train of thought, her mind recalling how twisted Damon's face had looked before he'd forced his blood on her. It was almost like the damage that had been repaired in their somewhat rocky friendship had been suddenly remade, like an old wound reopened.

"How could Damon have done that to me?" she asked, her voice shaky. "Why would he do that to me when he, of all people, knows what it's like to have that choice taken away?"

They reached a small stream, which she could've easily stepped across, yet Elijah crossed ahead of her and reached out his hand, which she took gratefully, helping her step across.

"If there's one thing I've learned over the past millennium or so," he said carefully, his tone cautious. "It's that people will do crazy, sometimes irrational, things to keep the people they love in their lives."

"Love?" Elena had picked up on the key word. "What's love got to do with what Damon's done?"

"Perhaps I've overstepped my boundaries. I thought it was abundantly clear how Damon feels about you. I presumed you knew."

She stopped in her tracks, closing her eyes as she thought about the various clues she'd failed to pick up on over time.

"I can't lose you…"

"It would suck if that was gone forever…"

"There is something going on between us and you know it. I can prove it…"

"I will always choose you…"

"What does Damon know about love?" she spat bitterly. "If he did know what love is, he wouldn't have done this!"

"I sense we are ready to talk about the elephant in the room," Elijah noted dryly, coming to a stop next to her, noticing how tense she was. "I sense whatever it is you have to say you didn't want to say to Stefan in case it hurt his feelings, am I correct in that assumption?"

She nodded dumbly, not even attempting to wonder how he could see through her so clearly.

"This is all moving so fast," she said, gesturing around wildly. "I love Stefan. That I know. Everything else… Well, I was supposed to take it as it came. Until now, I'd never thought about the future. Not in great length. I'm seventeen. How am I supposed to know what I want at that age? I mean I haven't figured out if I want kids, whether I want to start a family or not…" The tears were building up in her eyes. "I was supposed to take the future as it came. It wasn't supposed to come this soon."

He was staring at her, his eyes remarkably soft for a cold individual.

Elena wiped her eyes, but more tears seemed to crop up from nowhere. Sobs were building up in her chest, and she felt herself shaking. There was a pink tinge to the sky she didn't like the look of at all; with the sunset came the night, and with the night came the sacrifice ritual. It had all arrived so soon.

"And?" Elijah pressed urgently.

"I don't want to be a vampire, Elijah," she sobbed, looking so heartbroken he couldn't help but feel for her – even if it was only a little. "I never wanted to be one."

"You should tell Stefan how you feel," he remarked. "He's an honourable man. I'd even go as far to say Damon was too."

"How'd you figure that one out?" Elena muttered irritably.

"The road to hell is paved with good intentions," he quoted. "His heart was in the right place, even if his head wasn't. And there may be a time when he needs you, Elena, and maybe you'll have to make a difficult choice." His eyes softened. "My mother always used to say, never judge someone's character until you've run a mile in their shoes."

"Sounds like a wise woman," Elena commented with a soft smile, as she wiped the last of her tears away.

"Indeed she was." Elijah nodded.

They both looked up at the sound of the bushes rustling. Feeling inexplicably sick with worry, in case it was Klaus, Elena held her breath, feeling relieved when a tentative deer – female, by the looks of things – crept into the clearing.

Elijah pressed a finger to his lip, motioning her to be quiet. Not that she had intended making any sound anyway.

The deer raised its head, noticing them. Rather than running away, it stared at them, lowering its head in almost a bow before trotting off. Elena couldn't resist smiling at that perfect image.

In a way, it was the perfect image to leave humanity behind on.

"Life is full of little miracles, Elena," Elijah said, walking past her to head back to the car. "Maybe you'll be one of them."

She watched him leave, the reality of the situation hitting home again. She gave a heavy sigh, running her fingers through her hair before following him back to the car, still feeling troubled by it all.

Because honestly, she couldn't see how there could find another way out of this one.

And she didn't know what to attempt to process first: the fact Elijah had been surprisingly understanding, the revelation that Damon loved her, or that the sacrifice ritual was now only hours away, probably less.

But she did know one thing – she was determined to spend her last few hours with Stefan.

And maybe someday she'd get round to forgiving Damon.

Maybe.

For now, she'd take forever one day at a time, just like she'd always planned.

Can't believe how far we've come with just 5 episodes of EE.
I hope Nina referred to Elijah when she spoke about the hybrid of the two of them.

Maybe she knows something
