Stef (FauxDetective), pointed out on the Toby thread that 3.09 is the second time that Paige has invoked doctor-patient privilege with Toby before she would open up to him about something. She drew some interesting parallels between the two characters there.

I think it's also a very interesting insight into Paige's character that she feels she needs this guarantee before she will trust someone to divulge bits of her personal life to. We've also seen her be extremely protective of personal stuff - she didn't want anyone to know about Drew at all and she pretty much goes ballistic when she feels they are butting in to her life - not always without justification, but sometimes it seems her reaction is a bit extreme.

I wonder who violated her trust so badly that she feels she needs a guarantee of trust - and without it she keeps so incredibly silent. It's possible that's part of the issue with her mom, but I don't really get that vibe - at least not from the one episode. It feels like Paige's issues with her mom are much more about how much her mom's disappearance hurt her dad - not so much with anything Veronica did directly to her.

Given that she seems to pretty much idolize her dad, it doesn't seem likely that it was him, either. So maybe it was Drew? Or was there someone else that Paige confided in or trusted in only to be betrayed?

I really want you to make this (or a version of it) into a Tumblr post because it's so true - we talk about how the geniuses don't trust easily - and they don't - but it's another example of what I've said time and time again that because Paige is a normal, we often gloss over or just don't notice how similar she is to them (like I've said before, both Paige and Walter have reacted like 12 year olds to jealousy, but hers is played for comic relief and his is not) and this is anothe really good example of that, her lack of trust. Maybe someone did betray her trust in a big way - Drew cheating on her comes to mind, but like Ronnie, that isn't the type of trust that Paige doesn't seem to have, it's more like she confided in someone about something important in the past and they ran their mouth. Or maybe since it was just her and Ralph for so long, it feels weird to be talkin to people about things because it's always been a closed circuit and now she's giving it another outlet.

That's exactly my point - it seems like she must have confided something very important and very private - and then had it divulged in some way that was very hurtful. Like you, I don't get the impression that this is from Drew's cheating, either. So I'm very curious as to who might have done it, and what the secret was. I wonder if it might have had something to do with her pregnancy? Maybe someone told her father - and it caused a rift between them, perhaps one that was not resolved before he died. That seems the sort of thing powerful enough to cause this.

I also wonder how that sort of trust problem is affecting her relationships. She's been getting closer to Tim - but she seems to still be keeping him at arms length on some level. How will this affect any future relationship she might have - presumably with Walter? He's not building up the best track record with her - manipulating her weekend at Tahoe and not telling her how he feels - until he's hypoxic. On the other hand, she wasn't able to reveal her feelings until he was unconscious and on drugs and she seems more than happy to take Toby's advice and not tell Walter what happened while he was in space. Again, she trusts Walter implicitly when it comes to their professional life - but she can't open up to him any more than he can with her on a personal level.

I am dancing around because I love all the ways we can actually compare Paige and Walter when it comes to their flaws. I'd also argue that it was Paige who initially shut down the communication with her and Walter that led to this whole mess. They agreed open communication in 2.01 - and in 2.06 when she was jealous, she did actually tell him that she wasn't sure how she felt about him hooking up with Stella (to which he then emphatically assured her he did not). But then in 2.14, Walter goes speed dating, the others ask Paige if she was okay with that because "you probably always thought when he decided to do this it'd be with you" but she clammed up, didn't admit to them it bothered her, and didn't tell Walter it bothered her like she did in 2.06. So she was the one who stopped the open communication stuff first.

And while we're on 2.06 - Paige admitted to Cabe in that episode that she wants Walter to be able to open up to her and show her every side of him, but she doesn't seem like she's capable of doing the same.

And as I think you've pointed out before, Paige's jealous "****" comments in 2.06 were very childish and petty - and certainly no better than Walter's petty jealous manipulations in Tahoe. If anything, although Walter hasn't exactly been a saint in this regard, he's done a credible job of keeping his jealousy in check and generally treating Tim with civility - even if his uncontrolled self wants to blow the boy out an airlock.
