As individuals, they aren't much alike. Della is smart - but not like Bones smart. And she's very in tune with people. In some ways, they are sort of the opposite of their gender counterparts. Perry can sometimes be a bit insensitive to other people and Della helps to keep him in line on that score, whereas with Booth and Bones, Bones is the one who is unconsciously insensitive and needs Booth to remind her when she needs to tone things down. Perry tends to be the one who thinks he's the smartest person in the room, and of course, that's Bones' issue as well.

Similarly, with the romance, I think Perry tends to think he's either above all that or not a good candidate, or that maybe true love doesn't exist. He, like Bones, is the cynic who needs convincing. Della and Booth are the ones who patiently steer the other to see what's been right in front of their eyes the whole time.

I can understand that a lot of fans might pair up Paul and Della - but it certainly doesn't work for me. Paul is a bit too much of a confirmed bachelor at least in the early seasons. Of course, based on the existence of Paul Drake, Jr. later on, apparently he wasn't. Perry doesn't strike me as a confirmed bachelor. He's just too involved in his work to have the time normally needed to find a steady girlfriend / wife. But since Della sort of falls right into his lap - he really doesn't need to take much time. He just has to see what's right in front of him.

I wonder how the dynamic between Perry and Della would have changed if she did get married. I imagine Perry might get sad and bitter - realizing he should have made a move.
