I remember the flack when Felicity suddenly showed up with short hair. I'm not sure I get it though. People cut their hair all the time - it's didn't seem so far fetched that Felicity would - or really any character, except maybe a character in a period piece. I can understand if an actress or actor is playing a part from the 18th century or something, when short hair was nearly unheard of. But any modern character's believability shouldn't be dependent on the length of their hair.

Same thing happened with Lexie on Grey's Anatomy. The actress had to wait so that it made sense for the character.

The thing with Felicity though is she was a college student. It's not that far fetched for a college student to decide they want to do some thing radical to change their looks. She could have shaved her head and it wouldn't be that hard to make sense of it in the story.

Although, in fairness, the one reason I can see for this being an issue is that shows usually write scripts several weeks in advance. If they happen to have a script written where something about the storyline features the actor's hair, then they could find themselves with a script they can no longer use or have to change drastically.
