April's Top 5 Characters Unrecognizable to the Actors Playing Them Photo Banners Made by Me 1. Luisa D'Oliveira / "Emori"  She was the first one that sprang to mind for me, and it's mostly because, when I first heard her name, I Googled her, and I didn't even recognize her in her photos. So yes, she's one who makes this list in large part due to her physical appearance. The show's costume and makeup department really do a great job of making her look different than she does in real life. Emori is much more rugged, due in large part to her survivor mentality and scrappiness when it comes to keeping herself alive. Luisa, on the other hand, has a lot of very girly and glamorous photos out there. She's gorgeous, and on the show, while I always found her appearance intriguing, it's a different kind of beauty. I don't know as much about Luisa as I do about some of the rest of the cast, but I do know that she's a avid video game nerd and that she used to study environmental science, so . . . contrast that to Emori, who's basically a nerd for all things criminal and studied Survival 101. 2. Mike Beach / "Charles Pike"  This guy honestly could and perhaps should be number one on my list, with the emphasis for this topic being more personality differences than physical differences. But I put him in at the second spot instead, just because physical differences did end up playing an important part in how I interpreted this topic. My god, this guy . . . what a fun, high-spirited, and positive force of energy Mike Beach is in real life! There is a reason we loved having him as a cast member in season three. He gave us so many glimpses into the behind-the-scenes life of the show with all the pictures he posted, and he was such a champion of kindness despite playing a character that was pretty much universally-disliked, perhaps even despised. For the record, I don't hate Pike. I understand his motivations for what he did, however misguided they were, and I really appreciated who he was on the Ark--I related to him as a frustrated but determined teacher. But given his actions, I can't feasibly like the character, either. It's impossible not to like Mike, though. He is so damn convincing in his portrayal of Pike that, even though I know he's such a jovial, uplifting guy, I actually find it physically jarring to see photos of him and Ricky together, like the ones at a recent con. 3. Bob Morley / "Bellamy Blake"  Oh, this little nerd. He wouldn't have made my list if we'd been basing this topic on physical appearance alone, but when the personality factor came into play, I knew there was no way I could make it without including him. I mean, how could I not, what with his plant selfies and love of Pokémon and penchant for wearing glasses, tiaras, and Shania Twain shirts? Bob is so dorky that he transcends that and becomes very hot and very cool. And how about his real voice versus his Bellamy voice? I didn't even know what I was hearing when I first heard him speak naturally in an interview. I literally thought I was listening to an entirely different person. (Gotta love the fact that the iconic Bellamy voice is a result of him being a little hung-over at his audition, btw.) That voice change alone is enough to warrant him a spot on this list. How the hell does he do it so naturally? Physically, the differences are smaller, with Bob obviously being way less bloody and battered than Bellamy, (props to the makeup people yet again), and tending to wear geek-chic clothes rather than guard jackets. Bellamy is probably also a lot more confident when it comes to body image than our beautiful boy Bob is. 4. Alycia Debnam-Carey / "Lexa"  This was another one that came to mind pretty quickly for me, and there wasn't really ever any doubt that she would end up on my list. I just wasn't sure where I would rank her. I flip-flopped on whether to put her or Bob at the third spot and ended up going with Bob, just because of that drastic vocal change, but they're very close to being tied. Like Bob, the physical differences between ADC and Lexa are minor but still noticeable, due in large part to the costumes and makeup--they darken her skin, don't they?-- and with her Australian accent, I know she has to change her voice, too. The personality differences are probably a bigger factor as to why she's on this list. I don't know a whole lot about ADC, I'll admit, but from what I've seen of her in clips and interviews, she seems very sweet, smiley, and light-hearted, which is clearly the opposite of the character she portrays. Lexa may not be my favorite character or the character I connect with the most, but I would be remiss if I didn't use this list as an opportunity to acknowledge that ADC really does portray a character who is nothing like her in any way at all. 5. Ty Olsson / "Nyko"  Another one who, much like Luisa, I really truly do not recognize without his Grounder makeup on. I had no idea who this guy was when he showed up at that German convention. No idea at whatsoever. This is another instance of the makeup and wardrobe department just doing phenomenal work here. I don't know much about Ty in real life, but from what I've seen of him at various fan events, he's outgoing and fun, very much the opposite of the stoic, gruff character he portrayed. Top 5 Characters Unrecognizable to the Actors Playing Them according to Marie 1. Alycia Debnam-Carey/Lexa   Lexa is absolutely terrifying and Alycia is a total sweetheart. Also, I never recognize her without her grounder makeup. 2. Rhiannon Fish/Ontari   Ontari is a psychopath who cuts heads off children (RIP Aiden) and Rhiannon is a nice normal person who I bet has never beheaded anyone. 3. Luisa D’Oliveira/Emori   Luisa is super chill and Emori is a career criminal. Bonus points for looking totally different without the braids, facial scarring, tattoo and head wrap! 4. Michael Beach/Pike   Pike is a universally hated racist dictator and Michael is a universally loved cheerleader of the show. 5. Bob Morley/Bellamy   Bob is a goofball and Bellamy is a ball of guilt and angst. Also, their voices are crazy different. |
