NANCY DREW SPOILERS & SPECULATION #1

(airs Wednesdays @9/8pm)

= new information/spoiler (last updated 1/22/2020)

GENERAL SPOILERS/NEWS

Season 2 premiered on Wednesday, January 20, 2021

Promo

Season 2 Description:
Season two of NANCY DREW follows the legendary teen detective as she solves mysteries - both earthbound and supernatural - in her haunted hometown of Horseshoe Bay, Maine. Nancy (Kennedy McMann) leads a sleuthing team of unlikely friends: George Fan (Leah Lewis), whose clairvoyant heritage will emerge through her encounters with the paranormal; Bess Marvin (Maddison Jaizani), a con artist and heiress with multiple lady admirers; Ned "Nick" Nickerson (Tunji Kasim), Nancy's ex and George's boyfriend, a gifted mechanic with a tragic past; and philosophical slacker Ace (Alex Saxon), whose computer-hacking skills have caused secret troubles that will soon be exposed. In season one, the Drew Crew helped Nancy discover the stunning truth that Lucy Sable, the ghost who'd been haunting her all season, was her biological mother, and her biological father was corrupt billionaire Ryan Hudson (Riley Smith). Season two is a direct pickup from season one, so it will span the autumn of 2019, during Nancy's gap year before college. Ryan will attempt to redeem himself through forging a father-daughter bond with Nancy while keeping her parentage a secret from the rest of his powerful family. Nancy will also find a way forward with her adoptive father Carson Drew (Scott Wolf) by becoming an investigator for his legal practice. Her adventures will bring the Drew Crew standalone cases, new romances, and emotional journeys of self-reinvention as Nancy tries to navigate with both her biological parent and the man who raised her - but the compounding intrigue and menace of the Hudson family will ultimately force her to make a life-altering choice between her two fathers. NANCY DREW is a production of CBS Television Studios in association with Fake Empire, with executive producers Noga Landau ("The Magicians"), Melinda Hsu Taylor ("The Gifted," "The Vampire Diaries"), Josh Schwartz ("Gossip Girl," "Dynasty," "Runaways"), Stephanie Savage ("Gossip Girl," "Dynasty," "Runaways") and Lis Rowinski ("Dynasty," "Runaways").

Season 2 production dates are September 29th- April 29th! [more here].

FROM ET Online: Episode 16 Post-Mortem w/ showrunners 3/11/20

Melinda Hsu Taylor: "I've watched shows as an audience member where, at the end of season 1, they solve something really big and it's time to move on to the next season. We didn't want to give people the option to do that. We wanted to keep them hooked and learning the new way that stories unfold, which is still serialized but also starting to lean a little more into standalone, for lack of a better word. We're going to have a mystery and we're going to finish some things up week by week. Other things are going to stretch out with emotional arcs and romantic journeys and ghostly influences over a longer [period of time]. We wanted to let the audience know there's more to the show than, "Who killed Dead Lucy?""

This changes everything for Nancy Drew. Everything she thought she knew about who she was and her life has been a lie. How devastating is this for her? How is she grappling with this new truth?

Landau: A lot of this is going to play out in episode 17 through 22, for all different shades of how she deals with this bombshell that's hit her life. And the answer is in many different ways. There's not one way you react to news like this.

We meet Detective Tamora (R.J. Hatanaka) for the first time and he's incredibly suspicious of Nancy and the crew. How tight of a leash is he going to have on the gang?

Hsu Taylor: I think you can say, in the most fun way, because he is a cop so he's not going to put up with their shenanigans, but he's also not going to break the law himself in investigating them. So he has to go toe-to-toe with them moving forward. We'll see more from him and we hope to see lots more of him. But I think you're going to really enjoy how he brings another flavor to the show.

He's also in possession of the missing skull. What does he plan to do with it? What's his motive? What's his next move?

Hsu Taylor: That comes back in episode 20. Tamora comes back in 19. It's really fun to see him onscreen. We like that actor very, very much.

Landau: R.J. is really capturing the character in a really fun way. He is a fun antagonist. He is an antagonist.

Can you set the table for how this revelation fuels the remainder of the season? I imagine this shake things up dramatically.

Landau: They are about to enter a whole new mystery, where the stakes are incredibly high for each one of them. What they have to do is continue to work together as a team. There is going to come a point where there is a major conflict. They're going to have to figure out where they effectively split up or stay together as a group.

FROM Entertainment Weekly 3/11/2020: Post 1x16 interview w/showrunners

"...but the ripple effect of the Aglaeca ritual going poorly is the thing that they really have to deal with front and center for the next six episodes. How we address that is going to launch us into season 2 with a couple of different story engines that will become clear. It’s not going to be a huge, cut-to-black cliffhanger kind of thing because I find that unsatisfying. It’s so irritating to have to wait for four months! So this will be like, “I can breathe over the summer but I definitely need to know how that turns out when it comes back in the fall."

ANDAU: "In the next six episodes we’ll be dealing a lot with the Aglaeca and the toll that was not paid. In order to combat that, we have to start unwinding the story and the mystery of who the spirit is. We have been laying the tracks for that all season as well. There are definitely things that viewers who have been with us since the beginning of the season will feel very satisfied and rewarded with."

What can you tease about the way the show ends its first season in the finale?

LANDAU: We are very excited about it. Melinda and I are currently writing it as we speak. We are going to have something happen at the end of the season that is going to create a vehicle for a lot of twisty, turny mysteries that are going to arise in season 2.

HSU-TAYLOR: As much as we love telling a story over 16 episodes, next season the long story arc won’t necessarily be 16 episodes; it will feel like a lot of cool chapters with things running continuously through, like romance and emotional journeys. But going forward the viewers will feel rewarded even more so week-to-week.

FROM Entertainment Weekly 4/14/2020: Season 1 Finale Preview w/ showrunners

"It’s going to be a really serious grieving process for her (Nancy)." re: Owen's death

"There is a lot more to come in the premiere of season 2." re: the Aglaeca

"It also leads us into the question of season 2, which is how much of your fate has been set in motion before you have any kind of hand in it and how much of it can be changed through free will?" re: the Aglaeca

"There will always be a supernatural presence in the show. It can come in many forms. It will always be rooted in something human and earthbound that’s happening in Nancy’s life and Horseshoe Bay as a town. We’re going to keep delving deeper and deeper into that genre aspect of the show as we move into season 2."

"I’m really excited to show everyone how the rest of the Aglaeca story plays out. Also being able to show where Nancy is going to go as a character after this revelation that she’s not the Drew’s biological daughter and her parents are Ryan Hudson and Lucy Sable, and just trying to piece together "Who am I?" in season 2 is going to be great."

"The father-daughter triangle we have with Nancy, Carson, and Ryan is going to be fun to explore in season 2. Carson is going to be trying to put his law practice back together, Ryan is going to have to decide how much of a role he wants to take in the family empire now that his dad is facing trial for murder. All of these things are going to lead to fun stories for everybody."

Other Post Finale Interviews: Kennedy McMann Post Finale Interview 4/15/2020, Entertainment Weekly, TV Guide

FROM Deadline Hollywood's write-up of the virtual ATX Festival 6/5/2020

“It’s essentially a dad triangle now, heading into Season 2. I think there’s an opportunity to explore the authenticity as a parent when you let down your kid,” EP Melinda Hsu Taylor said, referring to the arc of Carson, during the ATX TV panel. “It’s really rough, but I think there’s so much juice there to propel journeys, because we want [Nancy and Carson] to get back to the good place they’re in, in the books.”

“What’s exciting about where we go from here is, it’s not the type of show that gets wrapped up right away,” co-creator Noga Landau added. “There’s a real long journey Nancy’s going to go on now with her two dads."

"Landau noted that Season 2 will use Carson’s law practice as a story engine, “with the additional twist of, ‘I’ve got a billionaire dad, waiting in the wings.’”

FROM NEW YORK COMIC CON VIRTUAL PANEL: "NANCY AND HER TWO DADS" 8/15/20 (full video at the link)

Nancy is having a huge conflict of identity that Kennedy hopes will be resolved. Ryan has daddy issues and may also start looking to Carson as a father figure within the dad triangle so the potential for a bromance is very strong. Scott hopes Nancy and Carson find their way back to each other but that she also builds a relationship with Ryan. The writers like the show to be inspired by current culture so some current events might be incorporated into next season. [Summary courtesy of Iris; read full breakdown of panel here.]

-They start with some in-character questions. I didn’t really take notes because it’s not show news but it’s kinda cute. Interestingly, one of the questions is what Ace’s perfect date would look (driving in Florence and having a picnic). They also ask about how Nancy never shows up for work and she says “but when I do go to work I want Ace to be there”. Bess and Ace would dress up as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for Halloween. Ace came up with the name for his car in a dream.
-This was filmed on Tunji and Alex’s birthday (not sure when that is, but it gives us a timeframe for when it was filmed)
-Creator Noga and producer Melinda come in and questions about the show start.
-Will there be new characters in season 2? Noga says yes. Says a couple characters coming from the books will be added, and some totally new (like exclusive to the show) characters.
-Noga asks the cast their favorite moment from the show. Kennedy says the parent reveal. Tunji says the first time they see the Aglaeca. Riley says the masquerade party since set was so cool and they had so many extras and also finding out Nancy is Ryan’s daughter. Scott says the parent reveal and the Whisper Box episode. Says that AU episodes can become a gimmick but he thinks Nancy did a good job with it. Kennedy and Melinda agree and say that was one of their favorite episodes to film. Tunji says that scene in an episode early on with Ryan and Carson in Carson’s office and dead Lucy pops up because it was so creepy. Says that was when he realized “oh they’re really going scary with this show”. Riley says the actress who plays dead Lucy comes in early stays in character all day and that he’s never seen her out of character. Scott says the scene was weird to film because they were rigging her which took a while and he kept forgetting so he would look up and just see her there lol. Melinda says the actress who plays her is a contortionist and is super nice!
-Melinda asks about favorite bloopers. Leah (side note: her humor reminds me a lot of George she goes “Can I tell a blooper, I’m gonna tell a blooper”) says in the Whisper Box episode in the scenes in the woods they were always filming really late at night and the cast was just kind of loopy and having a lot of fun.
-Melinda asks if we will have more paranormal elements in season 2. Noga says yes “The Aglacea is not going away easy, if at all” and new ghosts because Horseshoe Bay is super haunted. They’ll get more into that.
-They do a rapid fire where they’re supposed to answer in as few words as possible.
-Kennedy asks Melinda what her favorite type of content plan to plan for season 2 is. Melinda says “longing looks”
-Melinda asks Scott one thing he wants to do as Carson. Love interest and sleuthing with Nancy
-Scott asks Noga what she’s most excited for in S2. She says the next phase in the relationship between Carson and Nancy.
-Noga asks Leah the scariest scare of season 1. She says the spirit world in the path of shadows episode.
-Leah asks Maddison her favorite quality about Bess. She says her enthusiasm and curiosity.
-Maddison asks Tunji if he has any tips or tricks to get into character. He says he stays in Nick’s accent on set all day.
-Tunji asks Mel her proudest moment in season 1. She says 1x17 and how fast Ryan found out about Nancy. The show didn’t want to drag it out.
-Mel asks Riley what song he wishes they could afford to put in season 2. He says walking on a Dream by Empire of the Sun
-Riley asks Noga where she pulls inspiration from when she writes Nancy. She says all over, Disney movies, horror films, dreams. Inspiration is everywhere.
-Alex asks Kennedy the thing she wishes she could go tell younger Kennedy, before shooting the pilot. Kennedy says that she could do it
-Mel asks everyone what they would tell their 8 year old selves? She starts by saying to keep reading Lord of the Rings and it will all work out. Leah says to always be yourself and to stop trying to shop at Abercrombie lol. Tunji says to stop stressing out his parents. Noga says that there’s a job where you get to write TV shows. Growing up in New Mexico she wasn’t anywhere near the film industry and didn’t even know that was a job. Maddison agrees with Leah and says to be yourself. Kennedy says that the things that will hold you back will teach you valuable lessons. Scott agrees, that challenges teach you the most. Riley says trust your instincts. Alex says agrees, says that it’s okay to quit things that you don’t like.
-It ends

FROM DEADLINE 12/11/20: 'Nancy Drew’: Aadila Dosani To Recur On Season 2 Of CW Series

Quote:
Dosani will play Amanda Bobbsey. One half of the Bobbsey Twins, Amanda is charming, but possesses a manic energy and street smarts as a result of growing up poor and on the wrong side of the tracks. Often resorting to petty crimes with her twin brother, Amanda puts herself and her twin above everyone and everything else. Praneet Akilla (October Faction) portrays Amanda’s twin brother, Gil Bobbsey.
NANCY

Per interview, Kennedy brought something to the writers that she wanted incorporated into the show and it is now apart of Season 2. [full breakdown of the video here.]

ACE

"And he has more and more the same investigative impulses that Nancy does. But something that we're going to delve into in the future is that there's more to Ace than meets the eye. He actually does have some secrets from his past that still need to be unspooled. Namely, why was he trying to hack into a federal database? That was what landed him in McGinnis' debt. It's in the pilot why he was working undercover for McGinnis to begin with, so there's still more mysteries to Ace that will be coming out in the future." [Source]

In conversation with Damian Holbrook of TV Guide Magazine, Landau was also asked whether we’ll ever learn the last name and true identity of Ace, the Bayside Claw’s congenial dishwasher/cook who has had secrets of his own to hide. “That’s a great question,” she teased. “We won’t say when. But one day, we will.” [Source]

Kennedy McMann: "I really love what’s developing with Nancy and Ace (Alex Saxon). They really are in the same mind and are both the first to say, ‘Yep, we’re doing it!’ They ask no questions and are ready to follow the crazy idea. They will figure out a way to do it or take a big risk. They’re really on the same wavelength in that respect, and there’s a lot of stuff to find out about Ace in the coming episodes and seasons that will be really satisfying." [Source]

I'm not sure. I've been tracking the news on productions restarting, but I'm guessing most CW productions, especially ones in Canada, probably won't start until late August or September. Season 2 is supposed to cover all of fall so waiting for the actual fall might be better for storylines anyway.

The only show that will probably go back early is Supernatural because they only have 2 episode left plus post production. The CW wants that definitely finished ASAP.

In CA though, it seems like the Gov is letting production start back up as early as next week...although I imagine it will take a while just to get things starting back up.
