Brave #6: "Our fate lives in us. You only have to be brave enough to see it." ~ Merida

The story;
Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In "Brave," a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida's actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Wise Woman (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it's too late.

Production;
Announced in April 2008 as The Bear and the Bow, Brave is Pixar's first fairy tale, and is somewhat darker
and more mature in tone than its previous films. Brenda Chapman considers it a fairy tale in the tradition of Hans
Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm. Chapman conceived the project and was announced as the director
of the film, making her Pixar's first female director, but in October 2010, she was replaced by Mark Andrews
following creative disagreements. Chapman later stated that her “vision came through in the film” and that she
remains “very proud of the movie, and that I ultimately stood up for myself.”

Merida is the first female lead protagonist in a Pixar film. She was originally to be voiced by Reese Witherspoon,
who declined due to scheduling issues. Instead, the character was voiced by Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald,
recently acclaimed for her role as Margaret Schroeder in HBO's Boardwalk Empire.

The end credits include a special tribute to Pixar co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs, who died in 2011.

"Some say our destiny is tied to the land, as much a part of us as we are of it.
Others say fate is woven together like a cloth, so that one's destiny intertwines with many others.
It's the one thing we search for, or fight to change. Some never find it. But there are some who are led."

"The story of how my father lost his leg to the demon bear, Mor'du, became legend.
I became a sister to three new brothers, the princes. Hamish, Hubert and Harris. Wee devils.
They get away with murder! I can never get away with anything!"

"But every once in a while, there's a day when I don't have to be a princess. No lessons,
no expectations. A day where anything can happen. A day when I can change my fate."

Future titles;
Be as strong as the seas are stormy, and proud as an eagle's scream
This love it is a distant star, guiding us home wherever we are.
And leave behind this prison we share. Step into the open air.
We will run and scream, you will dance with me
We'll fulfill our dreams and we'll be free
We will run and scream, you'll dance with me
We will be who we are, and they'll heal our scars

We finally finished it last night. Better than I thought it would be. It started off very boring and by the middle of the movie and then the end, it became much better. I don't know how often I"ll revisit it. It doesn't stand out to me as one of the greats. It's a nice story and I'll definitely watch it again.

I really enjoyed the story. I found it more interesting the more the movie went on.

The only thing I get hung up on is that when I go to say the lead characters name, I say the Spanish version which translated to English is the offensive S word for poop, lol.

But they are different words

Merida is a feminine name of Latin origin that means “one who has achieved a high honor.”

I love this movie so much. First of all the storytelling is so different than the previous "princess" movies. Aside from Mulan, I don't recall a heroin telling. As well as this type of a mother-daughter story. It definitely broke the Disney movie stereotypes. This is one of the movies that passes the Bechdel Test too

That’s so true everything you said.

I did like the different storyline in it.

Very interesting about it passing the test! I never realized that until now.

Aww

I love the editing and animation style (this is the first animation to design hair this realistically, all the mimics of the characters etc), I love the cultural references while it being so familiar to all of us, I love the comedy, I love the family dynamics, I love the characters... Different words, yes, but one letter off and when we pronounce it in just regular english, it sounds the same almost haha. If I had a scottish accent it would be different.
