Under the Dome Novel by Stephen King {#2}: The book behind the show.. Read/Re-read {{*BOOK SPOILERS*}}

Welcome to the 2nd Discussion Thread

UNDER THE DOME

a Novel by Stephen King

~~~
~~~

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when -- or if -- it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens -- town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician's assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing -- even murder -- to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn't just short. It's running out.

That's good to know. When I was reading it, there were some parts that were fascinating. Then, I would start reading a boring part and lost interest.

^ I'm surprised, too! It's great that people are still reading it, though. I'm definitely glad I did, even if I didn't love it.

It's great to see people's perspectives on the book vs. the show. Some people were really mad the show wasn't like the book, but I'm glad it's different.

I don't like a complete adaptation. What's the fun in that? There are no surprises.

I don't think I'd care for the show very much if it was like the book.

I actually kind of think I'd like it a little more if it was like the book, but...for that to be the case, it'd have to be on HBO or AMC.

Thanks for the new thread! So I missed you finishing the last one up... I haven't been around for a while I guess.

But I managed to read about 80 more pages and will continue tomorrow in the morning first thing I love it from now on...

Rusty I can't believe how stupid all of them are! Damn it, don't they get that Big Jim isn't stupid at all when it comes to getting his plans through and saving his a**?! That makes me so furious. Now he is in jail... Just amazing

About what Rusty found... Are those really aliens? Really? Like really? That part was kind of confusing.

The others planning on getting Rusty and Barbie out

But damn it, what's Andrea doing with the VADER files?! She is supposed to give it Julia?! Damn it... I really hope she isn't about to face him on her own, I swear I would have to murder some of the characters if she would even think about it.

Andie... I have no words. And Junior is just crazy.

At this point, Kris, all I can do is give you a hug and say, keep going. We are very much enjoying your observations!

<-- the hug. You'll need it.

I'l need it? Oh please... I guess really bad stuff lies ahead.

I'm really curious if Joe's plan works out about the Geiger counter and radiation.

And at some parts of the book it seems as if all of them are being watched. By these aliens? So many questions!

ETA - I'm almost through it! Only 40 more pages that have to wait until next weekend... But some of the end was really boring and damn it, what kind of end would that be?! I'm really curious if the Dome will disappear and some survive or if really all of them are about to die. It's so sad.

I agree, Kris, it did get pretty boring in places near the end. I almost felt SK was struggling to figure out how to end it.

Keep us updated! (and btw, don't worry about double posting here - it had been 2 days since your last )

Oh yes! Somehow my feeling as well! It got really exciting at the end and then somthing like that... Somehow doesn't feel too good. The end should be the best part of it

And Big Jim still being alive. I'm not okay with that! So sucks!

You know what would be funny for the last couple of pages? If one of them would just be in a psychatric clinic and it's all an hallucination No, kidding... But there can't come a lot more stuff anymore, right?

Maybe it's a nightmare?

It's a nightmare, all right .. but unfortunately, very real.

I think the hallucination/dream idea is one SK actually considered. Judging from interviews I've read, he created all this but then wasn't sure how he wanted to explain it.

40 more pages, you say? Can't wait!

So, it's really real... Damn it, I really hope that the explanation is still coming for me and not that the alien crap is all of it. If so I would be damn disappointed.

Yes, 40 more pages and I'll finish those at the weekend definitely!

He really considered the nightmare idea? Wow, I'm not too bad, huh? But would have been too obvious if I even thought of it? I guess so
