I wonder if after a while you grow immunity? Like, maybe his powers are more...psychologically based, and once you get to know him they don't really affect you anymore.

Their relationship is so pure, because kids truly see people for who they are inside and she never even hesitated to approach him which shows his true self to the audience before the show even starts developing the character.
