I think the writing for her was sadly terrible.

Agreed. Keiko was just an accessory on TNG, and never really expected much of her there. Was hoping for more on DS9, and they did flesh the character out a bit, but she always seemed to be an afterthought.

Re Trollheart's last big post, I hate the Alien franchise. It's a sick kind of slasher thing where you're supposed to get a kick out of seeing sympathetic characters get killed. The only one I liked was Alien: Resurrection, which was a lot better thanks to Winona Ryder's performance and Joss Whedon's writing. I hate Ridley Scott's pretentious recent additions to the franchise.

I hardly watched DS9, but regarding Keiko on TNG, wish we had seen more of her..

I have to go against the trend here and say I did not like Keiko. At all. She always seemed to be annoyed, as if someone was having some sort of private joke at her expense. Mind you, I was no fan of O'Brien either, though you couldn't help but love Molly.

I'm very fond of O'Brien. Colm Meaney is a great actor. But Keiko wasn't that great a character. Not terrible, but not great.

Keiko was never given much to do. She had a few nice moments setting up a school on DS9, but that was never a huge storyline. Then she was shipped off to a job planet side, and rarely seen her.

They never seemed to put much effort into her characterization.

I just didn't feel she emoted well at all. Even in the DS9 one where all their fantasies started coming through, and Molly had Rumpelstiltskin in her bedroom, I felt the kid stole the scenes. Keiko never impressed me as someone who was terrified for her child. Neither did he, come to think of it. Like I say, Keiko seemed to have one look, vaguely annoyed and distracted, and it came through on virtually any scene she was in. I never connected with her. I mean, I didn't really like Kira, but I could understand and sometimes empathise with her. Keiko may as well have been a model or something for all I cared about her.

One good line in that episode - was it "If Wishes Were Horses?" - O'Brien snarling at Rumpelstilitskin - "Look here, figment!" Class.

Part of me thinks that part of the motivation in keeping Keiko as a secondary recurring character was that in TNG they wanted to give fans a couple, but didn't want to put Picard and Crusher or Riker and Troi together.

I liked that they showed Miles supporting Keiko pursuing her career, and that a long distance relationship could work.

I kind of felt it was a case of "two ethnic stereotypes for the price of one": you had Miles, the ornery, thick Oirishman, and Keiko, the inscrutable (!) Japanese woman. It was like they were trying to force them together, and while Meany did a reasonably good job I still think Chao made it seem like either she had settled or had changed her mind too late; she never seemed to me like she was in love with Miles. Just how it came across to me. He seemed a little henpecked, and I wonder if the fact that he spent so much time with Julian bears that out?
