It's been a while since I've seen the early episodes/ As I remember, B'Elanna was quite confrontational with Janeway right before Janeway offered her the Chief Engineer position ... which had B\Elanna totally tongue tied.

I think Parallax showed each of them that the other really was a competent engineer. It went a long way for helping their relationship.
