Merlin: Uh, I'm Merlin.
Arthur: So I don't know you..
Merlin: No.
Arthur: Yet you called me friend?
Merlin: That was my mistake.
Arthur: Yes, I think so.
Merlin: I'd never have a friend who could be such an ass.
Arthur: [laughs] Or I one who could be so stupid!
[Merlin goes in to hit Arthur, Arthur stops him]
Arthur: I could have you arrested for that!
Merlin: Who do you think you are? The King?
Arthur: No, I'm his son. A r t h u r.

Uther: You saved my boy's life! A debt must be repaid.
Merlin: Oh...Well...
Uther: Oh absolutely! This merits something quite special.
Merlin: Well...
Uther: You shall be awarded a position in the royal household! You shall be Prince Arthur's manservant!

[everyone applauds]

Arthur: F a t h e r !

[Arthur and Merlin look at each other and then turn away in annoyance]

Arthur: I barely know anything about [my mother].
Merlin: Can't you ask your father?
Arthur: He refuses to talk about her, it must be too painful for him. Sometimes it's as if she never even existed. I still have a sense of her...almost as if she's a p a r t of me.
Merlin: That's the same with my father, I never knew him...My mother's barely spoken of him. I've got this..vague memory, it's probably just my imagination.

Arthur: ...However, I do know that without you I'd still have a troll for a step mother. [pause] Well, thanks...

[Arthur puts his hand on Merlin's shoulder and Merlin goes in to hug him. Arthur steps backwards with his hands up]

Arthur: Whooaa, what are you doing?
Merlin: I...thought you were going for a h u g -
Arthur: Noo...
Merlin: No.
