Yes, it is often very similar, and when you decide to learn Dutch, you will learn it in no time. All my friends from Germany picked it up very fast.

But it is a little bit unfair (a little bit because we are such a small country) that we have German at highschool for at least 5 years ( and French and English) and nobody learns our language!

It never happens, though, it's definitely frowned upon, and the teacher can be procecuted for other reasons. I'd have to check if the teacher-student dynamic would make a difference, but, technically, 16's the limit.

It is unfair. But that's also what makes this language great. It's not spoken in a lot of countries and actually a pretty hard language. Even for Dutch students, it's one of the most difficult subjects. (with all the exceptions).
