It's good how Brooke could be depicted as loving Lucas without getting all silly about it addressing the speed of the Naley marriage really showed there with Brucas the contrast of how you can be sensible about teen love even if you're head over heels for that person.

and I love his content expression as he hugs her when she's worried about being "late". He doesn't know she's referring to pregnancy, but it's clear he's 100% happy with her and Brooke's fears about his feelings are totally unwarranted.

It is, he's still dealing with losing Keith, but the times we see him truly happy in those eps are when he's with Brooke

It doesn't fit with how he treated her in that season. He cherished her.

The only thing that perhaps enforced that insecurity in Brooke (other than Peyton declaring her feelings) was Lucas going away with Karen for a little while. But that was a stupid thing for Mark Schwahn to have Brooke be jealous about; his mother was grieving and needed a vacation. That had nothing to do with Lucas shutting Brooke out.

His first words when they're driving back is "I'm thinking about Brooke" when Karen asks him.

Yeah, Lucas just needed some time away, & when they talked about it in 3x22 where Lucas said that he did miss Brooke, that should have been the end of that issue

If this show had been in the hands of a more competent (and less creepy) showrunner, then I'm convinced that Lucas would have spent the rest of the show pursuing Brooke despite how many times she'd push him away out of fear.
