It did, the writers did such a bad job of trying to make that breakup & the supposed reasoning behind it believeable...

Also, in 3x04, when Lucas had that feather from Brooke's costume, he kept it in the box with his heart medication. Pretty obvious metaphor there that she was part of what his heart needed
