I think they are just not that great at writing forced pairings. They decided to write Ray and Kendra together. While Sara/Leonard and Oliver/Felicity came about naturally because of the actors.

That's how it is for me and shipping. They can't force a pairing on me, I need the actors to sell it to me first. I don't care if the couple is canon in books or comics. The actors need to make me believe it or I won't. A good example for me is I shipped Ron/Hermione in the books but shipped Hermione/Harry in the movies. I think the actors had better chemistry.

I never pre-ship because I need to see the characters and actors chemistry and most importantly I have to love both characters as individuals first. I'm very picky about my ships.

Captain Canary has checked off all of my requirements.

Completely agree. the nature couples seem to be the best ones.
I love when stuff just sort of build itself up.

Oh wow for Harry Potter.

For me I can't ship a different pairing on the show/movie than from the books.

I haven't done that yet!

I pre-shipped probably twice and both times it worked out perfectly for me.

Of course once was with Sara/Len who I shipped since Comic Con Weekend 2015.

Nice Captain Canary checked off on your requirements list.

ITA about why Olicity/Captain Canary work is because of the natural chemistry of the actors

Stephen/Emily have just killer natural chemistry and we are seeing it again with Wentworth/Caity

If your grammar is good, and you have a decent plot and you have the character personality nailed down then you should do okay.
