Newt was mostly looking for the Niffler and then met Jacob along the way and that was the start of his chaotic day at New York.

He was just there to quietly release the Thunderbird but met Jacob, Tina and Queenie all in the same day. All of it was accidental too. If the Niffler didn't escape, Tina wouldn't have noticed Newt.
