I guess Jo wanted to show that Gryffindor & Slytherin are indeed house enemies and it just amplified even more between Harry & Draco. Tbh, early on in the fandom I thought that was all good but looking back at it now, it all seems kind of petty to me story-wise.

I really didn't like how they treated Snape at Hogwarts. He didn't have that many friends and the Marauders were the popular jocks in school.

I mean we read and literally saw it. But of course that doesn't excuse all the horrible things that Snape did, including joining the Death Eaters. But that decision was triggered heavily by his own insecurities.
