I forgot if he read the books prior to being cast in the movies but my guess is that he didn't.

And I guess that's fine just as long as the director can do a good job with the actors.

True and David did do well portraying Remus. Ralph Fiennes also didn't read the books so his performance was debatable but generally the fandom liked him.
