I think before part 1 he perhaps went to war and not during Hogwarts. Being a soldier has an age limit right?

I assume so and maybe before part 1.. so part one is set to be set in 1926 and WW1 was set in 28 July 1914 – 11 November 1918 so yep he was definitely in the war
