More on Xander trying to rape Buffy:

Xander was not possessed in the normal meaning of the word. It wasn't the way you usually hear of a separate entity entering someone's physical body and controlling it as if it is their own with no knowledge of the previous occupant's inner workings. Xander was still in charge. It was a slow possession. It was basically for all intentions and purposes, what happens with a vampire. They still have all of their memories and motivations but with an animalistic presence that lowers their inhibitions, heightens bloodlust, and takes away their socially constructed morality.

It was bad that Xander didn't override the primal alpha enough to not try to rape Buffy but the real issue there was that all it took to get him to that point was a shotty conscience. Jaime is right that it was what he said in the scene that pointed to it really being Xander. It wasn't Me Hyena, You Woman, Mate Now. It wasn't one being trying to dominate another. It was personal. Xander brought up how Buffy would rather be with Angel, how Willow was in love with him and hoped he would get over Buffy, how he believes his feelings aren't unrequited and that Buffy is just lying to herself about how she feels, that he thinks she just wants *a little monster in her man* "you like your men dangerous, right? Well guess who just got mean."

What I hated more than Xander lying about having amnesia of the whole event (no matter how awkward he would've felt apologizing and explaining can't hold a candle to how Buffy feels being the one who was almost raped by her best friend and having to ignore what happened for his benefit) was that when Buffy caught him in the lie a year later he still did not have a conversation about it. He changed the subject. It was obvious Buffy wanted more than that.
