I have always thought part of what she was talking about was Spike.

Yes I certainly think her Spirit guide was subliminally guiding Buffy's soul towards Spike. He was constantly the one she had rejected and run away from in the season, The one she was afraid to risk the pain of love with.

At the end of the episode she does what her spirit guide suggested (love, give, forgive) with him and then it all changes between them both forever. He is then allowed into her life.

If Buffy had never given him a kiss and forgiven him, he would have never got his soul back and they would have never been soul mates

The fire is a metaphor for Spuffy as well

It makes sense that Buffy wanted fire back and it was Spike that gave it to her. He also was the only one that could get her to love again.

Buffy had been pulling away from love because she didn't want to get burned again but during handclasp embraced it.

Looking at that makes me want to slap Buffy and tell her to forget Ben and go to Spike.

I have the urge to do that too much.

I do understand completely why Buffy couldn't and the struggle she went through.

Just as much as Spike's.
