Something about the fandom
I kind of noticed how in real person fiction fandom, there isn't much attention payed to black musicians (including Destiny's Child, which was the contemporary of the Backstreet Boys). Not even to New Edition, which's the band that inspired New Kids on the Block. Ditto The Temptations, The Platters and Four Tops, two of which are some of the groups that inspired New Edition.
Now I can imagine an objection where you'd say well they're old so they're not relevant, but this hasn't stopped people from listening to a Platters song from Wandavision or a Louis Armstrong song in Fallout. This doesn't explain why the Temptations' and Four Tops' contemporaries The Beatles inspire a lot of fanfiction and fanart, I get a nagging suspicion there's something.
