Well, I think that was only part of why it was easier for Angel. He was always better at masking his emotions for the most part, so bottling his feelings for Buffy up inside wasn't really too much of a stretch for him IMO.

I think it actually has more to do with Angel never feeling that he deserves to be happy and his belief that people are happier away from him than with him. It could be argued that Angel loved Buffy and Conner the most since their happiness was more important than his own which is why he felt he had to separate himself from them completely.

I've never felt that Buffy's over Angel or that Angel's over Buffy... To me, it's just so obvious that they still love each other even though they've been apart for years and they can't be together for now.

In season 7 of BtVS :

- Buffy admits to Xander and Willow that she loved Angel more than she will ever love anything in this life. That's quite a powerful statement to make, particularly when we consider that she has had two relationships after Angel (Riley and Spike).
- When Buffy talks about the fact that she had to kill Angel, it's obvious that it still hurts her when she thinks about it even though it happened almost 5 years ago.
- When Buffy sees Angel at the end of End of Days, she kissed him deeply on the lips. You don't kiss a friend or an ex you don't love anymore like that.
- Buffy tells Angel she can't risk him. She sends him away from the battle. Dawn and Angel are the only two persons she tries to send away from the battle. She can't risk Angel or Dawn but she doesn't mind risking Spike? That's very telling.
- We clearly see that Angel is jealous of Spike in ''Chosen'' which show that he still has some feelings for Buffy.
- Buffy doesn't see fat grandchildren in the offing with Spike. In other words, she doesn't see herself with him in the future.
- Buffy calls after Angel to tell him that she does sometimes think that far ahead. Buffy does that because she wants him to know that when she thinks of the future, she still sees herself with him.
- Angel says that sometimes is something... That shows he also wants to have a future with Buffy.
- Buffy tells Angel that it will be a long time coming and that it will be years, if ever. Buffy wants Angel to know that she still wants to live a life with him but that it might take her a while before she's done baking
- Angel tells Buffy that he's not getting any older because he wants her to know he understands, he doesn't mind, he will wait and he'll be there if she still wants to have a future with him when she's done baking.

In season 5 of AtS :

- Angel says that their love is a forever love.
- Angel admits he's waiting for Buffy to be baked.
- Nina thinks Angel is thinking about Buffy when she's in bed with him... (If I remember correctly...)
- Angel dreams that Buffy and Spike are having sex and it's clear by his reaction that the dream affected him.

I think that all those scenes show Angel and Buffy still have feelings for each other and still want to have a future together.
