Richard was, initially, the more difficult, stick in the mud, too. He had to be pressured into taking Rory golfing.

He softened as Emily became more and more wonderfully horrible to people. And, that works out for the best, especially where their relationship to their daughter comes in.

I do think he was harder in the beginning but definitely more laid back than say, Emily. I really loved the moments we got between Richard & Lorelai, even the strained, more tense moments between them were special. I just think Ed & Lauren played well off each other.

Loved them too. I also think that their bond certainly grew over the years.

Their bond grew even in the first season, the episode where Richard's taken to the hospital is one of the best in terms of the 2 of them.

Anyone have a favorite moment between them?

Going back and watching the pilot he seems super reserved and aloof and almost too stern but as soon as he starts warming up to Rory, it’s like a switch goes off inside him and we see a more loving and caring father/grandfather. I wonder how much of that was Ed or was it in Amy’s writing?

I think the season 7 finale had one of my favorite moments between them when he said “it takes a remarkable person to inspire all of this.” Ed saying that while choking up makes ME choke up every single time.

I would have to agree. That scene in the finale was what I needed in conclusion of their relationship. No matter what happened in the end, he was proud of all that she did.

I also love the complexity of the scene with Richard in the hospital in season 1 and Lorelai having a hard time facing him.
