5.09 Emily Says Hello Episode Discussion

Quote:

Rory (Alexis Bledel) decides that she and Lorelai (Lauren Graham) should split up at the next Friday night dinner and confront Richard (Edward Herrmann) and Emily (Kelly Bishop) separately about ending their separation. However, Emily dashes their hopes of a reconciliation by announcing that she is ready to begin dating. Meanwhile, Lorelai invites Christopher for lunch at the inn, unaware that Rory had warned Christopher to stay away from her mother. Feeling guilty that she hadn't told Luke (Scott Patterson) about seeing Christopher, Lorelai confesses that they had lunch, and Luke "convinces" himself that he isn't jealous.
Melissa McCarthy, Yanic Truesdale, Liza Weil, Sean Gunn and Liz Torres also star. Rebecca Rand Kirshner wrote the episode directed by Kenny Ortega.

I can't wait for the new episode. I am quite excited about it. :)

jennarose 11-16-2004 10:55 PM

I heard the radio promo for the first time this morning. It was quite dramatic and made me laugh.

-Katie- 11-16-2004 11:11 PM

I agree. The radio promo was cheesy (not as cheesy as OTH's, oh goodness that was a bad promo) but I was like "That is so stupid." I giggled for a long time.

jennarose 11-16-2004 11:12 PM

Oh, yes, OTH's was even worse. I don't watch that show so I wasn't paying as much attention to it.

Roswellgirl1001 11-17-2004 12:59 AM

Wow, Rory falls asleep fast. I wish I could.

:goof:

fridayschild 11-17-2004 01:07 AM

could you elaborate more on the summary of the episode??

catterwall 11-17-2004 01:08 AM

Hee!! I just got the symbolism in the pipe-cutting jealous boyfriend scene.

Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god.

Rebecca Rand Kirshner, I love you. Please alternate with ASP for who writes episodes the rest of the season.

Wow. I hope everyone else enjoyed that episode as much as I did.

So many things happened tonight that I've been waiting for to happen forever!

RRK rocks!

We FINALLY got Rory telling Lorelai what we've all been saying for so long - Lorelai tends to become a sixteen year old again when Chris is around. Granted, Rory didn't use those words, but, she implied it. God, Alexis acted the hell out of that scene. Awesome, awesome, awesome acting on her part.

We FINALLY got a Rory/Marty scene! That was a long time coming. I don't like that Marty likes her. Why can't he just like her as a friend? Rory fell asleep pretty quickly. Loved that she vented to Marty. Love that she has someone to vent to. Are we supposed to assume that Rory and Marty have these "study" nights a lot?

We FINALLY got to see how Emily really feels about the separation. The ending was so sad. The way she just broke down in the middle of the hallway was so heartwrenching.

L/L were top notch tonight. We got more making out, this time longer. I actually didn't mind T.J. that much tonight, since he was clearly only there so that Luke could have someone to talk to about the whole jealousy thing, which, by the way, was a great scene. Although, I really hope that T.J.'s not the person who Luke's going to confide in and seek advice from all the time.

LG looked absolutely gorgeous at Friday night dinner. The top, the hair, the makeup, she looked beautiful. Her eyes looked especially blue. That Lorelai/Emily scene where Emily asked for advice about dating from Lorelai cracked me up. So hilarious. The way LG delivered the "Hello" was perfect.

Paris' Ramadan thing was quirky and stupid. However, it meant that we got to see her, so, it's ok.

Ok, I'm starting to doubt that something won't happen between Lorelai and Chris that affects the L/L relationship. Those awkward pauses and shy glances at each other during lunch? Yeah, those made me really worried.

Speaking of the lunch thing, AB did such a good job with Rory yelling at Chris. Her acting has really improved.

Preview. Don't you love how EPG makes it sound like Luke did something horrible? The last part of the promo, where Luke says something about how Lorelai doesn't respect him, and then she seems really desperate, is so sad. It made me tear up.

Edit-The Jackson storyline did nothing for me, however, I did like the constant "he loooooves you"'s that were tossed around.

Oh, and, Gigi's adooooorable. Loved Rory's "Yeah, I like seeing Gigi" line. Oh, snap!

One more thing. Lorelai turned off the light.:)

They love their Liz Taylor references on the show. Tonight when Emily was getting dressed for her date, Lorelai made mention of the Liz Taylor movie Butterfield 8 when telling Emily, she could go in just her slip.

Symbolism? You're gonna have to fill me in cause I'm probably not going to get it.

I *loved* the scene with Rory and Christopher! I'm glad Christopher stood up for himself this time and I thought it was about time Rory got those things off her chest. Good for both of them.

Also, I'm glad Lorelai called Chris. For all the hubbub with people predicting Chris would swoop back in and muck up things with Lorelai and Luke, Chris came out just fine. He's not here to throw a wrench into Lorelai's life. Lorelai can mess up her own life by herself thankyouverymuch.

1) To start with the obvious. TJ must die. I'm so hoping that the "secret" they were referring to in the promo for next week is that Luke has TJ's corpse stored in a cellar in his backyard.

2) I liked seeing Marty - Rory bonding. And Rory actually studying with someone and acting like she attends classes? Was cute seeing his hopes get up when she said she broke up. Not so cute that Rory will probably crush him without even thinking about it. Well. After she wakes up.

3) So was Rory trying to meddle in the affairs of her grandparents payback for the grandparents meddling last week or was the grandparents meddling karmic payback for Rory meddling with Lorelai?

4) Gigi lives and Rory actually (unlike last year) acknowledged her.

5) I liked Paris fasting for Ramandan. Selectman Jackson is getting old.

6) Dean is gone. But for how long? And don't feel guilty about gloating Luke.

7) Good to see Emily moving on and dating. It's tough. But she had to bite the bullet sometime. Poor Simon looked crushed when he wasnt invited in. He thought he was going to get lucky.

8) If Rory wants to meddle. Setup Paris with Richard. He deserves a date too!

9) Finally an explanation for Rory's excuse that everything goes wrong "everytime" Chris drops by. That she has selective memory and is not necessarily remembering things correctly (such as Max's breakup) and it may have more to do with her in the past grasping to slivers of hope that her parents would get together than necessarily serious chances of that actually happening.

Rory did have a point that Lorelai may not have been taking Luke's concerns into consideration but Rory should've discussed those with Lorelai and NOT gone behind his back and seen Chris.

Chris for the first time since the start of the third season actually showed a backbone in responding back to Rory.

10) Did Lorelai do the right thing in telling Luke? On the one hand it really did serve no purpose. On the other hand jealousy in small doses can be useful. But in the end she really didn't hide anything anyway. Telling Luke about seeing Christopher right after seeing Christopher is far different from telling him about a meeting a week, a month, or a year ago. While perhaps mentioning it beforehand is better, telling him right after still showed honesty.

There really isnt much of an issue. Which is good. Since causing a breakup over something so stupid would be .. well.. stupid.

11) Favorite line of the night. "I can't hate the pathetic."

12) I want to know what Luke is hiding. The painful burden the unspoiled are doomed to suffer. :(

Kay, I agree with you--great episode.
I wasn't as worried about the Lorelai/Chris interaction. I think they've always had that kind of reaction with each other. Kind of the teenagers in love kind of thing-which is where their relationship pretty much ended anyway. I'm hoping that the thing with Luke and the boat will force Lorelai into seeing which man is "the perfect man" for her.
Loved the Emily scenes. Especially with the dressing. You sure can see where Lorelai inherited her quirks! And Emily is oblivious to it all...they're not so much unalike as she thinks.

One thing to say about Rory--Preach it, sister!! She did a great job of laying it out for her mother. She really made Lorelai think twice about what she was doing. I figured she'd just pick up the phone at the end of the ep, and when she didn't, I was in a happy place. Until the promo, of course.

Looking forward to 5.10!! Did ASP write it?

Wow. I really loved that episode. Mostly I've just been watching the old first and second season episodes, so all of this different relationship stuff is taking a little bit of getting used to. Especially the whole thing with Christopher and Rory. Definitely missed that. Way over my head. I know a lot of people have been waiting for Luke and Lorelai to get together for EVER, but still, everytime that Christopher is on the show, I get so happy and excited. They're so good together. Anyway, back to the episode. I really liked all of the parts with Emily dating that guy. Especially how happy she seemed and then just seeing her break down like that in the front hallway was crazy and so sad. I had definitely bought that she didn't want to be married to Richard anymore. Guess I was wrong! Okay, and the Marty/Rory thing. So, after last week's episode, the writers really made it seem like Logan and Rory were going to be an item, and now we've had Marty dumped in our laps. Not that I don't like Marty. Whatever. I just hope it's not going to turn into a bad boy/good boy, friend storyline like with Dean and Jess. Because that can get really annoying. Now. Finally. Lorelai... So, as I said I'm still a little undecided over Christopher and Luke, but then I haven't seen the past two seasons, so maybe they would have made up my mind. I just hope Luke and Lorelai last a bit longer because all of Lorelai's relationships blow up in her face and besides, where would she get her coffee and pastries if not at Luke's? Anywho, the promo for next week? I really hate how hyped up and dramatized the WB makes all of the episodes sound. What terrible secret could Luke be hiding that Lorelai wouldn't have found out in the past, I don't know, 15 years? She is pretty nosy. Plus, what could Luke be hiding in a town like Stars Hollow. Please, everyone knows you have termites five minutes after you know. (Sorry that episode was on today) Anyway, it'll be a mystery until next week I guess!
