This was all over tumblr, stating it's symbolism... a soldier getting in front of the wedding cake, blocking their view.

It's possible that the soldier is the obstacle as long as Colin thinks Pen doesn't like him. Once Colin realizes that she cares for him, and has been in love with since she was a little girl, he's not even a threat anymore. who knows. what do you think?
