Yeah I am happy that the writers showed both sides of him. I feel like a lot of times the comic relief characters are just there to be funny but Sokka has a lot of depth!

Unfortunately no, only some can bend. It's either an ability one is born with or they are not. He was not born with the ability.

Katara was though...I don't think this was the case early on but as you keep watching you'll see he's a bit insecure about being a nonbender with a group of friends who can bend.
