I KNOW, I mean, I knew because I was spoiled, but just judging by their sweet beginning, who knew there'd be SO much drama

I remember John Wells called it, "Writer's Darwinism." Once he saw what talents he had in them (especially Maura) he and the writers basically made a sport of how they could up the angst season after season.

Before joining this board and before getting back to watching ER (before I had a DVD player or a good computer to download/stream) the way I caught up with ER was reading. Reading ER related websites, but mostly, reading e-mails from a YAHOO group. And, like, 90% of the e-mails were either from people who loved Carby and thought they were endgame, or people who couldn't stand Abby. This was around seasons 8 and 9, so judging by the e-mails, I thought all that was going on was this Carter pairing with an insufferable character I didn't know. There was ONE Lubby shipper, who didn't say much, so I just thought it was a ship that was done.
When I finally got around to watching those seasons, it was so funny to remember those Yahoo days, because even though I was spoiled, I thought it was so clear from the beginning that Carby would never work in the long term, SO clear that the Lubby spark was still always there and how the hell could someone not stand Abby?? |

I know, she's such a complex character, so many flaws, issues and complications going on, but that's exactly what makes her so relatable and why you keep rooting for her to overcome everything and be happy. It's not easy, rooting for her, but it was so satifying in the end

Amen. She frustrated me to no end at times, but only because I knew how amazing she could be.

I look at S 14 as a perfect example for our love of Abby, she cheats on her husband, yet she is the one we feel for. How many other TV characters would we just hate after they cheated on their spouse?

Exactly! I guess some fans weren't quite so strong, as Maura has said she got so many negative reactions from fans on the street during that season.

Oh, Blackout is on my No Rewatch list, along with On the Beach, 21 Guns, Bloodline, Graduation Day, and a handful of others.
I think the thing about Abby is that almost everyone can identify something in her that is similar to their own demons. And maybe in some cases, people identify things in her that are either demons they aren't willing to acknowledge or similar to the demons that someone close to them battles. And in other cases, I think it's a taste thing. Abby is very complex, very dark, and if someone watches television only for characters who are basically fairy tale or soap characters, someone grounded in reality is not theircup of tea. And of course, when I say it's a taste thing, I mean to imply that those people have none. __________________

After watching Blackout, I was a mess. I was shattered by Abby, but absolutely buzzing by Maura's performance. The only justification for her not getting a whiff of Emmy buzz for that episode is that I have to assume all voters are L/A fans who blocked the entire thing from their minds.
Added you, Misha's Minion (great name.) |
