Episode Discussion: 12.21 "The Gallant Hero and the Tragic Victor" {May 11, 2006}

From NBC.com:

Quote:
THE GALLANT HERO & THE TRAGIC VICTOR
9:59pm 2006-05-11 ALL NEW!
THE GALLANT HERO AND THE TRAGIC VICTOR-- Freshly back from Darfur, Pratt (Mekhi Phifer) struggles to get the real story when two abused boys come into the ER with their injured father. Neela (Parminder Nagra) is nervous when she is urgently called up to Dr. Dubenko's (Leland Orser) office, but is quickly relieved when she gets the good news. Meanwhile, two U.S. Army officers enter the ER, and the staff worries that it might be bad news. Clemente (John Leguizamo) comes into the ER acting very strange and after putting some of his patients in jeopardy, Kovac (Goran Visnjic) forces him to take a break. After bickering for months, Morris (Scott Grimes) and Albright (Dahlia Salem) can't seem to fight the sexual tension between them. Maura Tierney, Linda Cardellini, Shane West and Sharif Atkins also star. TV-14
I'd say, based on the title, that things aren't looking so good for Gallant...

Wow, someone needs to give PN an Emmy, an Academy Award, a Tony Award, a BAFTA, every award possible because she just gave us a beautiful performance. Amazing.

Poor Gallant. And oh Neela, such tragic news on the heels of good. Then again, finding out that Albright is going to be her attending? Awful and just rubs salt int eh wound.

PN did an amazing job this episode so did MP. I loved the way Pratt was subtlely choked up between coming home, the patients boy and Gallant, he had one hell of a day too and it showed.

Gallant's last words to Neela and her reaction to them were just heart breaking.

I could have done without the Clemente insanity but I suppose now we are finally rid of him for good. And Albright? Really did not need that extra bit of information about her sex life. And from Morris, yuck.

I knew this would be an enjoyable episode the moment I heard Kanye.

Parminder did an excellent job - very believable reaction to Gallant's death from start to finish. I loved the Ray/Neela bit and the Abby/Neela friendship bit. ER needs more of the compelling friendships that the first seasons had.

Clemente needs to check into an asylum somewhere. He's completely lost it.

Luuuuuuuuuuby.

And oh man, SHIRLEY! Haven't seen you in ages! And you look exactly the same.

That promo looks really, really good. This is going to be one slow week, my friends.

I don't really know what to feel about this episode. On one hand, it did successfully tie up all the loose ends from other storylines. On the other hand, it was just so "blah"

First the downfall of Clemente. Was I the only one who liked him a lot initially? I thought he was extremely competent and funny, when he wasn't being a "jerk." I remember when he said "I know what you all think of me...."; that was hilarious! I think Clemente's character was "stomped on" by the writers. He could have gone out a lot better. It seems just extremely out of character from what I saw of him at the beginning of the season to go completely insane the way he did. It just saddened me that from a character that had a lot of ground and potential just took a maddening downswing and lost complete credibility.

Not a lot of Neela in this episode. Although PN was fabulous as usual, I thought Clemente had the major storyline tonight, when it should have been rightfully Neela's. Maybe we'll have that rectified next week. But PN struck it home, especially in the breakdown at the end when she watches the Gallant video and also when she yells at Ray.

It was nice to see Sharif at the end. He did really well and was very competent as the man who might not see his wife again. He did hit all the major issues that I think a lot of us were wondering about in regard to him and Neela and the aftermath.

Limited Roomie interaction, but I felt bad for Ray too. Not as much as I did for Neela but still.... Surprisingly, he also sounded so bitter when Abby questioned him about what happened with Neela. Maybe slightly also out of character? But I loved how he tried to comfort her...

Luka was great as the supporting character tonight. It was great to see him involved in other storylines of other characters, and be the connecting thread. I don't think I've seen this of him in a long time.

All the rest of the actors were also really good tonight. Props to Mekhi for the 10 year old kid scene.

haha, that was long...but let me know what you all think.

Sort of all chatted out. But this was an entertaining and heartfelt episode. The writing, directing, acting, and pace was better than it has been in the last 3 months. Gallant's death and video tape was a fitting touch. Parminder was brilliant and did the best with what she got. Her grief over Gallant was spot on.

Got a small glimpse of Abby/Neela's friendship which is the most believable friendship the series has right now. Clemente is an asylum seeker and needs treatment. ASAP

I really enjoyed watching the episode and was not bored. That has not happened in awhile. I liked the previews and look forward to the finale next week. If this keeps up then it bodes well for season 13.

Wow what a show.
Like those that posted before me poor Neela.

I can't believe that Michael's dead. At first I thought it could be true as the truck that blew up was covered and the one that Mike was in was not. And I'm getting tired Clemente and I can't understand why everyone continues to tolerate him. And where the heck is Weaver, she hired the him and now Luka has to deal with him. Back to Neela; I wonder how this is going to further effect her friendship with Ray?
And can you believe Morris. I think they should get rid of Morris, he's a total joke.
One of the things I love about ER is that they really know how to finish a season I just hope it does leave me too heart broken, ie something bad happening to Luka and Abby or Neela and Ray.
