Even 12 years later, despite ratings dropping or no award recognition, it seems like ER was still such a prestigious show to be a part of, when you think of all the amazing guest stars it had

I was just saying that to my brother two nights ago. Something happened in the last 4 or 5 seasons to make every major actor want to come do an episode of ER.

^ Right? I don't know if it was TPTB trying to get attention for the show again, but still, the actors didn't HAVE to go and guest star on a show that wasn't even half as popular (ratings wise) as it used to be in the past. Then again, as time passed by, tv production became so much more sophisticated and movie-like that it seems to have become more attractive to all actors (or at least less gosh-no), whereas back in the 90's there was more of the I'm-too-good-for-tv thing going on

In the present, starring in a hit show is like the Holy Grail of actors nowadays.

I also think that ER being off-the-radar in its later years was a big draw for the stars. They knew they could just come in, do some good work, exit quietly and probably snag an Emmy nomination while they were there.
