Episode Discussion: 15.8 "Age of Innocence" {November 20, 2008}

From NBCUMV:

Quote:
ER
AGE OF INNOCENCE
PROTECT THOSE WHO CAN NOT PROTECT THEMSELVES—Sam (Linda Cardellini) gets frustrated with Gates (John Stamos) when he gets obsessed with finding a homeless war hero. Neela (Parminder Nagra) is upset at her intern after he gets the entire surgery department into a lawsuit. A husband and wife come into the ER after someone tried to burn down their home. Brenner (David Lyons) loses his cool with a patient and it gets physical. Scott Grimes also stars.
Have at it, guys.

They should have called this episode "The Day the Doctor's Got P*ssed!". Everyone seemed to have a big rat stuck up their you know what.

Neela was a total b**ch the entire episode. But I find great consolation that it all had to do with Ray. I just love seeing Neela pine for Ray! The tables are definitely turned. Neela is totally pissed and she's taking it out on her intern. She wanted to go see Ray for Thanksgiving and now she thinks he has a new girlfriend. Yay! Now it is Neela's turn to fight.

Brenner was equally pissed. Him just standing there watching that guy get beat nearly to death was extremely disturbing. It's hard for me to find sympathy for a jerk like Brenner. And I don't like this sudden change into a helpless/tortured victim. However, I give David Lyons a lot of credit. His acting was very effective.

Poor Archie. This was the second week in a row he had to hear a confession of someone's tortured past. Perhaps, he should consider becoming a shrink.

Tony also joined in with the grumpy bunch with his attitude to Sam over his obsession to find the homeless vet. Anyway, I don't have much to say about that because I'm not interested in Gates. Is it wrong if I thought that Gates, Sam, Sarah, and Alex make a cute family?

I never thought that I'd say this, but I really missed Banfield. She brings another dimension to the show. I'm totally not interested in the interns. It's too late to get to know them. Any storyline involving them only seems like window dressing.

First off, I totally didn’t need the Brenner/blonde student action in the beginning. However, I do understand that it was needed to show how he’s ‘moved on’ from chasing Neela. (hopefully. Don’t know how the spoilers agree much). I have to say, though kudos to David Lyons. His execution was touching and disturbing. He’s also kind of pretty when he cries. Also, I can appreciate a Neela/Simon friendship. They seem so have an ok dynamic like that.

Did anyone else get a kick out of Andrew’s fear of Neela? Loved it.

And I completely love how Morris was so concerned over Neela and Ray. Archie Morris: the original Roomie Shipper.

You read my mind about Morris being a shrink. I cited examples below.

but....

*squee*

Neela was going to go visit Ray.

Just knowing that she was going to go to see him means so much. I loved Morris is reaction.

I just love Morris this season. He is awesome. I loved how he was like to Neela "Ray has a girlfriend?". He then get's stopped and talked to for about 10 seconds and then back to Neela "Ray has a girlfriend?"..."Are you ok?" lol. Morris knows whats up. Morris is a Reela shipper just like Pratt (R.I.P) was.

I mean he is like the ER psychiatrist this season. How he talked and interacted with Batina after Pratt died, How he talked and interacted with Ray, How he talked and interected with banfield when she told him about her son, How he talked and intereacted tonight with Brenner. I really...reallly...hope he get's a quality happy ending. Morris deserves it. Hopefully he get back together with the one religious girl from two season ago or he get's together with that escort from last season and this season.

I agree that David Lyons was great in that one seen with Morris..
I hate that i almost felt sorry for Brenner. I hate how they made him seem more human. I still hate him but what shocked me was he was he ended up being right about that one guys at least thats why I think they implied at the end that the one guy turned out to be guilty. Still hate him...

I loved the phonecall with ray but i believe Morris and Neela's convo was better for us roomies. She was going to go visit Ray. *squee*

Loved the mention of Ray and seeing Neela speak to him!-- Deffo showing Neela pining for Ray! YAY!
I have to say David Lyons acted real great in this episode.. especially the scene with him and Morris.. really felt for him!
Morris is a rockstar!.. lol.. Love him.. I love how he is there for everyone.. I think especially after pratts death, it has matured him immensely. You saw this once again in this episode with his concern for Neela and Brenner speaking to them.
Apart from that, nothing much interested me.. the gates and finding the soldier wasn't very intrigueing.. and Neela was deffo very moody. lol But I guess with good reason.. Ray and his new girlfriend.

I forgot to mention that I was really intrigued with Debunko and Neela talk later in the episode. About if you want to be a rockstar doctor then you best get out of county or something like that. The comment about neela leaving county...it would not shock me in the least if Neela isnt at county when the series ends. She won't be leaving because she thinks she is a rockstar doctor though imo. She will be leaving because she get's tired of county and maybe for another reason hopefully involving Ray. I would have been pissed if I was Neela after what Dubenko said to her. I think it's safe to say Debunko is over whatever he felt for Neela the last few seasons.

Yeah, I liked that Dubenko-Neela exchange too. He TOLD her. Seems like Neela had gotten all high-and-mighty and forgotten what it's like to be a student. I felt like she took what Dubenko said to heart, though, which is why she played nice with Andrew at the end. But I do agree that there will be other (*cough, cough*)circumstances that will make her look EASTward for more job opportunities.

Slicknick, re your comment in the roomie thread about that funny convo between Brenner and Neela, I agree -- there were some real laugh-out-loud moments last night. For some reason, I was really amused by that random patient in the chicken suit who said: "I was just passing out coupons and some vegans came up and started talking smack...I can wiggle my toes but my giblets kinda hurt." LMAO!

Neela used to be one my of my favourite characters but lately I'm getting sick of her. She deserved it. Dubenko was right, and his speech to her about giving back was the highlight of this episode for me (but then I'm biased ). She's been treating Andrew like crap and thinking she runs the place.

She was quick enough learning everything she could from Lucien, it's time for her to teach now.

I absolutely loved the way Lucien put her in her place. He is made of so much awesome.

DubenkoLover, I like your sig -- that was a funny Neela-Abby-Ray moment, watching Dubenko draw mitochondria (or whatever that was) on the wall...

Do we have a thread on ER's funny one-liners? There were some great ones...

that brenner story was so heartbreaking....that scene with him and morris is one of my faves so far. david lyons is such an awesome actor. and its kinda nice how morris seems to be the one the doctors divulge their pasts to.

so glad dubenko had that talk with neela. i was thinking throughout the entire thing about how many mistakes she made during seasons 10 and 11, and how she was way too harsh on andrew for making one mistake. and the lack of continuity with neelas hair was annoying me lol. but im probably the only hair-obsessed weirdo who actually cares.

im loving all the cute intern moments (espeically between daria and andrew ).

Thank you. Wall scribbling Lucien is my favourite scene ever.

My favourite Dubenko one-liner is probably "Milk of amnesia strikes again." LOL.

I'm not saying that a lot of what Dubenko said isnt true. A lot of what he said is. I just think he could have said it in a different tone and at a different time and place. I mean he said it after Neela sort of realized she was wrong. If it was earlier in the episode than it was warrented. It was like Dubenkp was saying "I told you so" which was probably warrented but I think it could have been said better.

I do hope Neela leaves County though. It's time for a new start. I honestly have no idea what they are going to do with Dubenkos character. I can't remember what her name was but the girl he was with last season who was premiscuious but was going to settle down with dubenko but then debunko got all jeolous and ruined that. I wonder if maybe she has a chance to come back and be wiith Dubenko but I don't know what tptb have up their sleeves for Dubenko. I can sort of guess with Neela, Morris, and Sam but the other characters are lost.

I really am liking Frank a lot though this season. I know he wasnt in the episode this week at all but I am really liking him. I have read that he used to be a jerk but Im having a hard time seeing how that could be. He has been a great guy since I started watching in season 12. I have caught a few season 11 episodes and he seemed nice in those as well.

I honestly don't care what kind of ending they give gates, brenner, and banfield but that may be only because they are newer characters unlike Neela, Morris, Sam, Dubenko, and Frank.

Slicknick, Frank was there in this week's epi. He was in that scene where Neela tells Morris about Ray's girlfriend. Frank interjects to tell Morris that the storage facility in Indiana (I think) needs to be paid or they're gonna sell his father's stuff. I must admit though that I did not notice Frank at all the first time I saw this scene. He had a couple of other small lines here and there throughout. Blink-and-you-miss-it moments.

I understand what you're saying, but that's just Dubenko and I think he wanted her to realise her mistake and learn from it for herself before he said what he did. And it's not like he was tearing shreds out of her in front of the entire surgical department. I thought it was tamer than some of his headbutting with Pratt and Kovac from way back.

If Wexler comes back I will not be pleased. In my opinion she was just peeved at him for calling her a **** and wanted to hurt him - she wasn't interested in settling down with him. I think his jealousy saved him a lot of heartache in the long term. He's a million times better off without her.
