Carter's Declaration of Love
Carter: I spend 23 hours a day wondering whether we're wrong for each other, wondering whether we've got the energy that we need to get through everything that we seem to get into, whether the baggage we both bring would sink a small ship. But in the 24th hour, I realize I've been thinking about her for 23 hours, and I come back to there's something about her that I can't stay away from. Something about her that makes me want to... love her.

Their Moment of Truth
[Abby walks into the trauma room where Carter is sitting]
Abby: 50ccs of urine output in the last hour.
Carter: Well, I guess that's something.
Abby: Yeah, at least his kidneys are working.
Carter: I dunno, when we get out of here I'm gonna take like a two hour shower.
Abby: Yeah I'm gonna sleep for twenty-four hours. [she dumps the trauma gown she was wearing in the bin]
[health guy David Torres walks in.]
DT: How is he?
Carter: He's stable.
DT: We know it's some form of ortho-pox so we need to limit contact.
Abby: Haven't we been doing that?
DT: You've been doing a great job handling this situation and the department would like to thank you.
Carter: You're welcome.
DT: Unfortunately, I'm afraid the two of you are going to have to remain in this quarantine area.
Carter: Why? We're not infectious.
DT: It's just a precaution.
Abby: For what? Why won't you just follow protocol and give us the vaccine?
DT: We will, as soon as we get final confirmation on exactly what we're dealing with.
Carter: It's smallpox.
DT: Nobody in the US has seen this since 1949 and due to the unknown origin of this outbreak, we're being extra cautious. It won't be much longer, thanks guys. [leaves]
Carter: Oh man.
Abby: How much does this suck?
Carter: "The department would like to thank you but we can't bring you a fan." [Carter pulls at his scrub top as if he wants to take it off but he looks over at Abby and thinks twice] Is it me? It's like a sauna in here. I'm soaked.
Abby: [walking over to him] Do you have a fever? [she puts her hand to his forehead]
Carter: No.
Abby: Well just, sit down.
Carter: I'm fine.
Abby: Sit down!
[he goes to sit on the gurney]
Abby: [holding out a thermometer] Take your temperature.
Carter: I'm not infectious.
Abby: Just, stick the thermometer in your ear.
[he does so]
Carter: Today started out like a normal day, you know?
[Abby preps an ice pack for him]
Carter: [the thermometer beeps] See? Ninety-nine. I told you.
Abby: Okay. You're still hot. [puts the ice pack on Carter's neck so her arms are around him] Is that better?
Carter: Mmhmm. [closes his eyes, bows his head down, then up again]
Abby: The worst of this is over, right? [a long pause, she searches his eyes] Tell me we're gonna be okay.
[Carter looks at her and then kisses her. He pulls back]
Carter: We're gonna be okay. [standing up, her arms still around him] We're gonna be okay.

Their First Night
[Abby is up on the roof smoking a cigarette after losing her first patient in the ER. Carter comes up and brings her coffee.]
Carter: Brrr! You know, there's warmer places to be alone. There's the furnace room in the basement, and the incubators up in the NICU.
Abby: I'd like to see you in an incubator in the NICU.
Carter: [laughing] I'm happy to try!
[they pause]
Abby: Well, uh, it's.. you know, all those years of being an OB nurse, 98% of what you see is just pure joy. You know, it's the happiest day of most people's lives. And um, the tragedy is horrible, because it's a life cut short, it's a mom, a baby…
Carter: [nodding] Sure.
Abby: Today was the first time I saw an old person die, and I guess I'm just not used to it.
Carter: Well, you want the good news or the bad news?
Abby: Give me the bad.
Carter: You never get used to it. The good news is, you never get used to it. At least I haven't. So, you may have come up here to be alone, but you're not.
Abby: [smiles and looks away for a second] So, they're having a Valentine's Day party, do you think they started without us?
Carter: [laughing] I certainly hope not. Heads will roll.

Their First Date
[Abby is getting ready in her apartment and listening to Hanging By A Moment by Lifehouse on the radio. There's a knock at the door and Abby goes to answer it.]
Carter: Hi.
Abby: You're wearing a tuxedo. You didn't say it was formal.
Carter: Yeah, it's formal.
Abby: Heh. You tricked me.
Carter: Doesn't really matter. You look terrific.
Abby: Yeah, well, we don't match though.
Carter: I could go change?
Abby: I don't even know if I own a dress.
Carter: Wanna go buy one?
Abby: [pauses] No. Can you - can you just wait a minute?
[Leaves him at the door and goes into her bedroom]
Carter: You mad at me?
Abby: Yes. You get a haircut?
Carter: [runs a hand through his hair and grins] Yeah.
[Abby's changing and Carter is waiting. He picks up a photo frame to look at the picture closer]
Carter: Whose this with you at the beach?
Abby: Eric, my brother.
[Carter catches a glimpse of her in her black bra, changing (her back to him) and quickly steps back, putting the frame down and busies himself with a vase of dead flowers]
Carter: You know, I never got the whole concept behind dried flowers. I mean, they're dead. [Takes the flowers out of the vase and replaces them with his fresh ones]
Abby: They're dead as soon as you cut them.
Carter: [eyeing his flowers] Yeah, but they look nicer.
Abby: Dead ones look nice too.
[He looks at the vase again and removes his fresh ones, putting her dead ones back in again]
Carter: Right, right. No, I was just wondering.
[Trying to find a place to put his flowers]
Abby: Wondering what?
Carter: Wondering ...why not just buy the fresh flowers?
Abby: Because there's something sad and dark about the dried ones.
Carter: [still looking] Oh yeah? You like sad and dark?
[Carter finally finds somewhere to put his flowers and places them at the back of a shelf]
Abby: Yeah.
[Abby comes out wearing a pink satin dress]
Carter: [about the flowers] Just give those a couple of days. [looks at Abby and smiles] Wow. You found something. It looks nice.
Abby: [looking doubtful] It's a bridesmaid's dress.
Carter: It works on you.
Abby: [grinning self-consciously] You're lying.
Carter: No, honestly, I don't think anyone would know that. It looks like it was made for you.
Abby: [smiling] Okay, now I know you're lying. Let's just go.
[They step outside and she sees a limo on the curb]
Carter: What? Did you want to take the El?
Abby: You're not going to take me to the airport and tell me, oh by the way, this party's in Paris?
Carter: [laughing] No. We stay in Chicago, I promise.

The Proposal

Carter: (Sees her on the rooftop. She's on a plastic folding chair)
Hey. (She throws her cigarette onto the ground) Don't put it out on
my account.
Abby: I only wanted half.
Carter: Nobody smokes half a cigarette.
Abby: I do. And I'm trying to quit.
Carter: Oh, back to that, are we?
Abby: I like routine.
Carter: Yeah, like disappearing on me.
Abby: I know. I'm sorry.
Carter: It's ... no problem. You had bigger concerns.
Abby: Yeah, like ruining your vacation.
Carter: Who knows - you might have saved me from a shark attack.
(Walks up behind her and moves to sit in a second chair, facing hers)
Abby: Run away, Carter. Run as fast as you can.
Carter: (Sits down) Where's Maggie?
Abby: She went home.
Carter: Minnesota?
Abby: Please.
Carter: Well, you want to hide out at my place for a while?
Abby: Did you hear what I said about running away?
Carter: I block out about half of what you say.
Abby: Only half?
Carter: Negative half. (She looks disappointed) I'm sorry.
Abby: No. You're right. (She stands and walks a little bit away from
him) I am negative. It's not hard to be when you attract misery
everywhere you go.
Carter: I'm not gonna let you do this...
Abby: I'm like a magnet for it. And you shouldn't have to deal with
this.
Carter: Now you're pissing me off.
Abby: Maybe you should just cut your losses...
Carter: You know, Eric is alive! (Stands) You could take two seconds
and rejoice in that!
Abby: I did! I hugged you and then I ran away to find my crazy
mother, and I never even came back to thank you. Thank you for
traveling all night. Thank you for working all day just to be with me.
Carter: You're welcome.
Abby: 'Cause, you know, my life is on hold. It will always and
forever be on hold. You don't want to be on hold with me.
Carter: Well, then don't put it on hold!
Abby: I have no choice! You do!
Carter: Right. Your life sucks. Now and forever, there's nobody that
you can love, there's nothing that you can do about it.
Abby: You don't want me to love you.
Carter: Can I decide that for myself!?
Abby: Fine! Decide! What do you want?
Carter: What do I want? I want you to stop being so afraid!
Abby: I'm not afraid!
Carter: I want us to stop being so careful!
Abby: I'm just ...
Carter: I want to marry you!
Abby: What?
Carter: I want to marry you!
Abby: Oh, you're proposing?
Carter: Yeah!
Abby: You're crazy!
Carter: Well, then I'll fit right in.
