Nancy was crying too hard to answer. Ace did the only thing he could think of to do, to bring her inside and drew her into his arms. Ace rubbed her back, the same way his mom did with him when he was upset. Being this close to Nancy felt very right and very natural and very good, he realized. But he pushed his feelings away, knowing that taking care of Nancy was most important. “Nancy, what happened?” With her face still buried in his chest, she shook her head, still not ready to talk. Ace led her to the couch and settled down next to her as he waited for her to be ready to talk.

Finally, Nancy lifted her head. “My dad just told me what really happened to my mom.” She said.

"No Nancy...you make me live." Nancy shook her head at his words. "Hey, look at me." Nancy reluctantly met his eyes. "I found a purpose because of you." He reached out and gently grasped her hand. He put it over his heart. "I've never felt more alive than when I'm chasing down leads with you," Ace declared passionately. "You're my inspiration Nancy."

“Ace, please. I want to go home.”

He felt his heart break a little at Nancy’s whine. She was exhausted, in pain, still disoriented from the poison, and in place that brought up only bad memories for her. All that combined to make Nancy feel pretty miserable.

“Alright, can you move over some?” Ace asked, kicking off his shoes.

Nancy gave him a look as she shifted over in the bed. He pulled down the railing for her bed and climbed in, being careful not to dislodge any of the wires Nancy was attached to. Ace wrapped his arms around Nancy, pulling her close. He was pleased to feel that some of the tension was released from her body.

“And we’re breaking in because?”

Nancy looked at him pointedly and as usual Ace followed her lead. They walked up some creaky staircase and as they made their way up, they realized they weren’t alone. She pushed him into a corner. Her breath was on his neck and he tried to ignore the feelings that ignited in him. But, before he realized what was happening she had reached for his hands. “I’ve got you.”

“I know,” she said as she turned to look at him with those big eyes of hers.

Here's the essay I was talking about:

Okay, let’s dissect the convo between Nancy and Ace at the end of 2x09, shall we? I don’t think Nancy is “attached” to Gil at this point like Ace is claiming. If she were, she would be doing the same thing Ace was doing: trying to track down the whereabouts of Momma Bobbsey. She says she’s not doing that because it’s “not her mystery to solve” but come on. When has she EVER cared about THAT? No. I think Nancy BECOMES attached to Gil BECAUSE of Ace’s claim. But I’ll get to that in a sec. When she asks Ace if he’s telling her to stay away from Gil Bobbsey, she’s not annoyed. Instead, she’s…curious. As she waits for his response, she studies him. She’s gauging his reaction. Will his answer contain jealous undertones? Or is this simply just a friendly piece of advice? Ace settles on neither. He WANTS to say “yes”. In fact, his mouth even begins to form the word. But in the end, he settles with basically skirting the question altogether and just telling her that he knows her. Because he does. Better than either of them realizes. It’s not the answer Nancy was subconsciously hoping for. She WANTED him to say “yes”. And I truly think that if he HAD, she wouldn’t have ended up on Gil’s doorstep at the end of 2x10. Nancy has unrealized, repressed feelings for Ace. But she sees that he really likes Amanda. So much so that he’s trying to track down her mother for her without even being asked. So, she immediately calls him out on it. “Says the guy dating his twin sister.” She’s teasing him, but if you look closely enough at her expression, you can see her heart’s not in it. Because deep down it bothers her to see Ace going the extra mile for another girl. She’s not used to that. SHE’S usually that girl. When Gil walks into the restaurant, Ace suggests that Nancy let the new guy wait on him. This was Ace’s subtle way of telling her to “stay away from him” without having to say those exact words. Because Ace knows no one can tell Nancy Drew what to do. But at this point, Nancy doesn’t pick up on that. She thinks about it for a second. I believe this is the moment where she decides to pursue something with Gil. Because Ace isn’t telling her not to. And because she knows Gil would be a great no-strings-attached distraction from all the drama she’s experienced over the last few weeks. A great way for her to keep repressing feelings that appear—at least, on the surface—to be only one-sided. So, she decides to go for it. But I truly believe, had Ace just answered her question the way he seemed to WANT to (and the way SHE seemed to want him to) the whole thing with Gil wouldn’t be happening right now. Ace planted that seed, and now he’s going to have to reap what he sowed.

Ooh that is very interesting and I think they are spot on. But, Ace is in far more denial than Nancy imo. Like he prob realizes he is attracted but he chalks that up to her being a pretty girl. But, I. His head Nancy is his closest friend. He doesn’t think he sees her like that but really that pull to her is pretty intense. It’s really there in 209. The closeness the way Nancy looks at him and when she looks away he looks at her.

I agree. He's in some pretty deep denial...but I don't think it would take much for him to realize his feelings.


Here's another post the same person made that I think is 100% spot on.

I really love how the Nace slow burn is playing out. Nancy is slowly coming around to her feelings, acknowledging that she has attraction that she has repressed. She’s finding herself being physically drawn to Ace whenever she’s around him. She has admitted to thinking he has pretty eyes and has thought about how soft his hair probably is. She’s on the path to figuring it all out, and it’s only a matter of time until she does. Ace, on the other hand, seems 100% oblivious to it all. He doesn’t move away when Nancy practically presses up against him during casual conversation, but he also never seems to be aware of how close she is. Because he’s currently infatuated with Amanda. And he’s distracted by all the long-lost brother drama. But the feelings for Nancy are there. He just doesn’t see them. YET. I don’t think he’s going to have the same slow realization that Nancy’s having. For him, it’s going to come fast, and it’s going to come hard. Maybe it will be a dire situation that flips the switch. Or maybe it will be as simple as somebody like Bess pointing it out to him. Either way, it’s going to be a magnificent moment. And I can’t wait to see it.

Haha, OMG, both of those posts are totally mine! I started a Tumblr account the other day because I feel like there is just so much about those two to analyze and I have so much to say about them, but I didn't want to annoy all of you over here with my ramblings. I plan on posting a lot more mini essays like that because I have a lot of procrastinating to do with the other writing I'm supposed to be doing.

But, Ace is in far more denial than Nancy imo. Like he prob realizes he is attracted but he chalks that up to her being a pretty girl. But, I. His head Nancy is his closest friend. He doesn’t think he sees her like that but really that pull to her is pretty intense.

I honestly keep going back and forth on this and can't really decide on what I believe. The reason I think he's completely oblivious and not just in denial is because we haven't really seen much from him toward Nancy yet. SHE'S always the one gravitating toward HIM. SHE'S the one who occasionally gives HIM heart eyes when he's not looking. SHE'S the one who has verbally expressed being attracted to HIM (pretty eyes, soft hair). I do agree that he most definitely finds her attractive. But he probably also assumes he would never stand a chance with her. He doesn't exactly fit the mold of the guys Nancy usually dates. Although, I feel like that might be intentional. Perhaps it's to show that Nancy's usual type is not actually what she needs. Also, given how condensed this show's timeline is, and Owen hasn't been dead all THAT long at this point, Ace probably doesn't think she'd be ready for a serious relationship yet, and all those things prevent him from acknowledging there could be feelings there.

It could be any number of factors. I think there is a sort of surface level attraction he is aware of but all the other stuff he prob chocks it up to their friendship. It’s not weird to be standing that close. We are just friends. It’s not like that? I am just a concerned friend.

This is a good point. As much as I love her Nancy cannot mind her business. Which makes me think she's not as into him as she seems.

Another excellent point. I think he's repressing his feelings for her now. I'm so curious about what would have happened if he had said to say away from her or if he says something about it in the future.

Please ramble on!!!! I love reading long essay and posts. It really pushes the discussion especially on here.

Yes to all of this... Of course Ace finds her attractive, but he cares so much about his friendship with her and with the Drew Crew...he's pushed it down. And with Nancy's track record with men (again not judging), he wouldn't risk his newfound family for something that was not serious. So I'm going with obliviousness and repression of attraction for Ace. Nancy, on the other hand, probably doesn't "want" to admit it...because then it's real...and having real feelings for one of your best friends (actual best friend?) would be difficult to deal with someone who's not good at emotions in general. She CANNOT lose Ace...not matter what...but there's going to come a time very soon where it will be impossible to deny what's happening. That's why I feel like Nancy will be the one to truly realize/accept her feelings at first. Ace will need someone to point it out (Amanda? Bess? George? Nick? The Fish?) There's also so much stuff going on right now...that it's definitely not the right time for any of this...but you can't help how you feel.

Also, Owen was basically forgotten by the writers...so I guess he doesn't really matter anymore?

And even though I think something is definitely about to happen between them by the end of the season (probably the finale)...something will prevent anything further until Season 3...which honestly could be good angst/drama. Because once they're are a couple...they are going to be truly amazing together (and very difficult to separate).

Gil is convenient. That's pretty much it. And she rationalizes how truly bad he is because of his mommy issues...but hopefully she kicks him to the curb soon. There are other options Nancy can pursue if she's looking to quench that desire. And I'm not talking about another person.
