Well, Bill would say, "I am still the same unmarried, childless, pot-smoking libertine I always was. Let's get this straight, it's not me that's changed, it's the left, which is now made up of a small contingent who have gone mental, and a large contingent who refuse to call them out for it, but I will."

[laughter from the audience] Real, I'm not making it up. California just passed a law requiring retailers to have a non-gendered toy section. A non-gendered toy section? Isn't Ken enough? We need a law for that? You have to inject yourselves into everything, from where you can throw a frisbee to who can braid hair? This is why so many people, by the way, were triggered by Covid policies, they were already sick of rules. Regulation should be a good issue for Democrats, it's certainly one they're associated with, and I think the average voter would agree that banks, and chemical plants, and drug companies need watching. Telling a company 'you can't dump the waste from your hog farm straight into the water supply,' we're mostly all for that. But Democrats have become a parody of themselves, just making rules to make rules, because it makes you feel like you're a better person; making sure everything bad never happens again, which you can never fully do, it just makes everyone else's life a drag."

And yes, he is still a liberal and a Democrat, it's the modern woke left that are blatantly illiberal. Just because he refuses to go along with the crazy woke left doesn't make him "right wing." It's not "right wing" to criticize it when centrists and other liberals are now doing the same thing. Even Democratic strategist James Carville, who ran Bill Clinton's campaign in the 1990s, says the problem with the Democrats today is "stupid wokeness."

James Carville: “What went wrong is just stupid wokeness. Don’t just look at Virginia and New Jersey. Look at Long Island, look at Buffalo, look at Minneapolis, even look at Seattle, Wash. I mean, this ‘defund the police’ lunacy, this take Abraham Lincoln’s name off of schools. I mean, people see that. It’s just really — has a suppressive effect all across the country on Democrats. Some of these people need to go to a ‘woke’ detox center or something. They’re expressing a language that people just don’t use, and there’s backlash and a frustration at that.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Carville, saying that only old people use the word "woke," and Maher reminded her that this is a word that her generation only just came out with recently, adding, "What word would you like us to use for the plainly insane excesses of the left that are not liberalism, but something completely different? Because you can't have that word, 'liberal,' from us, and think it should cover things like canceling Lincoln, and teaching third-graders they're oppressors. That's your new thing. A more pertinent question about the word 'woke' might be, why in such a short time has it gone from a rallying cry to a pejorative? If the word only made you think of rational, deserved causes like teaching a less whitewashed version of American history, AOC would still want to own it. But it's a joke, because it makes you think of people who wake up offended, and take orders from Twitter, and their over-sensitivity has grown tiresome."
