He was actually Anne Rice's original choice for The Vampire Lestat. :P

Tom Cruise was dreadful in that role. Stuart Townsend was much better.

PhoenixRising 12-08-2021 08:41 PM

Townsend didn't match the character. Lestat was a blonde Frenchman. Also, that movie with Townsend got the story all wrong.

Still a good movie and Townsend did a good job. Cruise just hammed clumsily and annoyingly.

I agree with you about Cruise, but I still wish someone had made a film that was closer to the book, and cast Lestat properly. River Phoenix was offered the role of the interviewer as a consolation, but he considered that an insult since he knew that Anne Rice wanted him to play Lestat, and he'd prepared for that role. Christian Slater ended up being cast in the role after River died.

Hollywood was way too cowardly to even include Gabrielle in Lestat's story in the movies. Nope, can't have Lestat's mother/lover in the movie. Murder, rape, pedophilia, pedicide, that's okay. But incest would be just too scandalous.

I'm not interested in Rice's books, just the films.

Apparently in the books, male vampires can't have sex, they're incapable of any sex act beyond biting. Why do so many writers and creators have a hangup about sex and/or relationships? Look at Angel having to stick to wanking off for fear of losing his soul. Look at the Jedi in the Prequels. Gets on my nerves.

Anne Rice wrote the books while she was suffering from alcoholism and drug addiction, and the books were in many ways a metaphor or an allegory for what she was going through.

Yeah, in the books, Rice says that the sex drive is replaced by the bloodlust. Physical sexual intercourse is no longer necessary in a vampire body because they're undead and no longer reproduce that way. Lestat does have a few sexually charged moments with Gabrielle, but mostly involving bloodletting.

It all sucks.

PhoenixRising 12-11-2021 05:55 PM

"Sucks" being the operative word.

sum1 12-12-2021 01:08 PM

Yeah.

PhoenixRising 12-12-2021 08:42 PM

Sorry for the pun.

sum1 12-13-2021 04:28 PM

I made the pun, not you, dumbass. :P ;)

PhoenixRising 12-13-2021 07:35 PM

Yeah, but yours wasn't intentional. :P

sum1 12-14-2021 06:06 PM

Why assume that? It was.

PhoenixRising 12-14-2021 06:58 PM

Oh, okay. :P
