A conference is a sub-division within a league.

The NFL, NBA, and NHL are all divided into two separate conferences. The NBA and NHL have the Eastern and Western Conferences, and the NFL has the AFC and NFC.

Seriously? Smallville? That show turned into absolute crap. And then a decade later they killed off Tom Welling's Clark and his whole world in the Arrowverse's bloody Crisis of Infinite Earths. The original comic book Crisis invalidated DC's whole comic line, you'd think they could avoid repeating the same mistake with their tv shows.
