Wait, they were celebrating Luke's sobriety not his birthday. Any way it eas the last scene they had red cake and the framing of the room was similar to the red room, so people started speculating that the Crains never made it out of the house and are stuck in the red room.

Re the ending scene with Luke's sobriety celebration, yeah the director definitely wanted people to think that they were still stuck in the Red Room and admitted toying with the idea ... but ultimately wanted to give the Crains a happy ending after all that they've been through.

In the YT clip I shared, thought that it was interesting how the number 7 had significance for the family until the very end. There are 7 of them in total by the end of the season, with Steven, Shirley and Theo's other halves in the birthday scene too.
