Marvel’s ‘Cloak & Dagger’ Cancelled at Freeform After Two Seasons

“We are so proud of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger and the trailblazing stories this series told,” Freeform said in a statement to Deadline, which broke the news of the cancellation. “We are also grateful to our incredible talent Oliva Holt and Aubrey Joseph for bringing these beloved characters to life, and showrunner Joe Pokaski for his vision. We’d like to thank our partners at Marvel Television for a wonderful two seasons and are we are hopeful that we can find another project together.”

More strikingly, however, the Cloak & Dagger cancellation comes on the heels of the news that the entire Marvel TV division is being reworked, with head honcho Jeph Loeb stepping aside to make way for a new regime that’s more creatively in line with Marvel Studios president (and now Marvel Chief Creative Officer) Kevin Feige.

Indeed, pretty much all of the previous Marvel TV output is being brushed aside. The Marvel Netflix shows like Daredevil and Luke Cage started being cancelled last year one by one; ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is heading into its final season; even Hulu just recently opted not to move forward with a planned Ghost Rider spinoff based on the character’s appearance on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

All of these Marvel TV shows had trouble aligning themselves with the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the MCU was governed by Feige and the Marvel Studios film team, which had nothing to do creatively with what Loeb and his team were doing on the small screen. That’s now changing with the advent of Disney+, which will launch several Marvel Studios-run limited series featuring MCU actors reprising their movie roles, like Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch and Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier.

Now, with Loeb exiting Marvel TV and Feige being promoted to Marvel CCO, it appears the vision for Marvel Television is being aligned more with the MCU, and the existing Marvel TV world is being snapped away. The only remaining live-action Marvel TV series are Hulu’s upcoming Helstrom and the currently running Runaways, the latter of which launches its third season in December. Will it, too, be cancelled shortly thereafter? I would not be surprised.

That is sad, Feige is a jerk. Typical CEO or CCO caring only for money but not for fans. At least jeff loeb as marvel tv boss actually cared for the fans in a way the least company heads do. Why can't disney simply bring over those shows to their streaming service.

Guess I'll not get disney+ plus after all. Why give money to this evil elitist company. I'll simply stream their shows somewhere on the internet.

I feel so bad for the fans. KF is a total ******* who doesn’t give af about the Marvel TV shows. I fear that Runaways will be next. Marvel has always treated Runaways like crap.

I wish I knew. How does it make sense for KF to be in charge of literally everything? What’s even the point then? It’s literally an entire franchise being driven by one man. Beyond stupid. Kills any and all creativity and no one will want to tale any risks ever.

After Black Widow comes out I think I'm frigging done with Marvel.

I won't be able to enjoy the future shows and movies knowing I'm supporting the corporate BS that resulted in the cancellation of so many great series. God forbid there be any Marvel shows not tied to the MCU or airing exclusively on the streaming service to further inflate Disney's monopoly. It's not like there aren't multiple universes in the comics or that Disney doesn't have enough money. But the suits and shareholders don't care, they aren't fans of this stuff, they're only fans of money.

This Disney+ crap is probably part of the reason the New Warriors pilot never got picked up by anyone either. Sucks, because I really wanted to see Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl.

after Runaways is over, I'm done with watching anything Marvel. Honestly, I have watched maybe 2 MCU movies since the first Iron Man came out. I boycotted them after they f'd over Runaways the first time. Even though I love the show we have now, I've never forgiven them for that BS.

And once the Runaways comic and SW Dr Aphra comics end, I'm done reading Marvel, too. They don't deserve my money. I know my money is just a drop in the bucket of Disney's profits, but who cares. I will spend my money on other companies that at least pretend to give a damn about their fanbases.

I don't understand this insane desire to tie everything into the MCU. Runaways in the actual comics has only BARELY ever been a part of the rest of the Marvel universe, and 99% of the time it's ONLY for events (and not always even then). It's just such a BS excuse. The DC universe is a mess but they still do well enough on their own (look how freaking long their TV shows go on for!).

If at least they cancelled the shows to then continue them on their own channel, that would be sort of understandable at least. But right now they don't seem to care. They want stuff like moon knight and miss marvel. When they already have captain marvel they don't also need miss marvel right? They could also have cloak and dagger instead or daredevil and jessica jones.

Maybe they won't cancel runaways for that reason after all since some assume disney wants to keep some of their stuff on hulu for a more grown up and drama ready audience.

Though that's bc they run on the cw and cw never cancels their shows unless the actors are ready to move on. But many really aren't good tbh. Black lightning may be the only good one among them. But the DCU shows are good, like doom patrol or that (sadly) only one season swamp thing mini show. Surprisingly also titans is a pretty good show on its own. Not very close to the comics, but if you try to forget that the story is still good (even if starfire is black and beastboy white instead of the actual orange/green combo)

But another issue is that Hulu is US only. So an international audience doesn't have much legal ways to watch C&D and Runaways.

Problem with CW is that it's still corporate execs making decisions based purely on what they think will make them the most money. It's not the writers' fault the Arrowverse shows are filled to the brim with melodramatic romance subplots, they're mandated to do so by the higher ups. We need people in those positions who actually care about the art.

Agreed. Even if it doesn't make much of a difference, I'd rather support those creators who deserve it.
