Westworld Film #1: Boy, have we got a vacation for you.

Westworld is a futuristic theme park where paying guests can pretend to be gunslingers in an artificial Wild West populated by androids. After paying a sizable entrance fee, Blane (James Brolin) and Martin (Richard Benjamin) are determined to unwind by hitting the saloons and shooting off their guns. But when the system goes haywire and Blane is killed in a duel with a robotic gunslinger (Yul Brynner), Martin's escapist fantasy suddenly takes on a grim reality

It isn't, really. Westworld the 1973 film was written and directed by science fiction author, Michael Crichton, author of The Andromeda Strain and Jurassic Park, both of which were made into movies. Westworld was Crichton's first attempt at writing and directing a movie, and it's since become a classic. Yul Brynner's android gunfighter is seen as the precursor to Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator. The film is similar to Crichton's later work, Jurassic Park, about a futuristic theme park called Delos, where guests have a choice of visiting three different worlds - Roman World, based on the Roman Empire; Medieval World, based on medieval Europe; and Westworld, based on the old American west.

The guests are given authentic clothing and weaponry, and are free to do anything they want in the park, including interacting with the park androids that are programmed to service the guests however they wish. They can have adventures, get into sword fights or gunfights, or even be entertained by the female(or male) androids who are made to be... ahem, anatomically correct. And the androids are incapable of harming any of the guests, and all weapons are made to be harmless against anything that generates body heat, like a human. They can only cause damage to the androids.

Now, just like in The Andromeda Strain and Jurassic Park, and consistent with Crichton's stories, there's a breakdown in the program. A computer virus affects the Delos computer network, which results in the virus affecting the androids, who all begin to malfunction and start killing the guests. Richard Benjamin plays the main character who is a guest and has to find his way out of the Delos game grid, all the while being pursued by Yul Brynner's "Man in Black," an killer android gunfighter who relentlessly hunts him down. Brynner's character was more than likely the inspiration for Ed Harris' Man in Black character.

Pary from the name and "something" happeningbto the hosts, its completely different really. But the idea is still the same.

I would say dont watch the sort of "sequal" futureworld, cause its just so bad.

I hope you do. It's a classic. One of the best sci-fi movies to come out of the great era of 1970's science fiction, along with Rollerball, Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Alien, Soylent Green, The Andromeda Strain, and Solaris.
