I thought this ep was good. I call this the Margaret ep because the focus is on her.

Last season I cried at the very last ep because of Margaret & QE. So I was looking forward to this ep to see more interactions of Margaret with her family.

Holy crap, Tom Burke!!!!! I had no idea he was a guest star on this show. :thud:

So Margaret is coughing all the time which is expected because she's a heavy smoker. She gets surgery for it and the experience prompts her to re-evaluate her life. So she tells QE that she wants to be more useful. Sadly with Prince Edward turning 21, he's given more responsibility and Margaret is pushed aside.

Later Charles tells her to see a therapist (and we also find out Diana is pregnant with Harry). That visit to the therapist made Margaret discover about her cousins who are kept away in a mental facility and she was livid. The fact that I had no idea about this until I saw this ep made me realize that the British press probably also helped with hiding this fact until of course this all blew over eventually and more people found out. That scene of Margaret and the Queen Mother talking was so disheartening to watch.

I enjoyed this ep too.

I did know about the cousins. It was a big scandal at the time. Terrible that they were kept in such a place for so long. I believe if memory serves that they were released from there after that.

I could relate to Margaret in this episode, having suffered with depression myself. Her life was full of sacrifice it seems. I wonder if she would have been happy if she had given up her Royal position and married Peter.

If it wasn't exposed, then they'd still be there. :(

I think she would've been happy but also not entirely as she would always wonder what it was like if she's still a royal. It seems to me that Margaret always liked being a royal. It's just that she didn't like being second fiddle. If she were in QE's place, it would've been so different. Her move would be watched and dictated everytime so imo, she's better off being second fiddle all things considered.

Yes, they could have spent their whole lives in that place.

Oh yes, she desperately wanted the job, but someone who wants it isn't necessarily the right person to do it! I agree she wouldn't have done such a good job.

I doubt Margaret would be able to do the things she's doing if she's next in line. And she seems to be someone who enjoys her freedom and being a royal so I think it worked out for her. Sadly it can be lonely and problematic to be in her position. :(

I suppose she had to weigh up how much of a sacrifice is worth it, in the end.

I do think Margaret is in a much better place this season compared to last season where she spiraled out of control. I know the real life Margaret was a lot different from QE but it wasn't until seeing this show that I realized how very much different they were.

Meliana 11-21-2020 04:12 AM

Yes, I can't say I knew an awful lot about Margaret.

I don't know much about her either. And from a non-British POV, we only ever hear news here of the royal family if it's QE, Philip, Charles, Diana, Camilla, Andrew & Sarah (back then). I know very little about the rest.

Margaret's always been my favorite and it's so sad to see her always so unhappy:(

and those relatives being hidden away from everything..that's just so awfully cruel:cry:

L i N d $ @ y 11-23-2020 08:32 PM

I read that it was in the 90s when it was found out and if it wasn't for Margaret, then none of this would've been exposed.

Meliana 11-24-2020 05:26 AM

It was a terrible thing to do.

JoJoF92 11-24-2020 09:38 AM

must've been awful for Margaret to be the only one to care basically

I was with her all the way. The way the Queen Mother was justifying what they had done. Yeah no.

AN ICON.
