Joyce is sort of naturally a bit unstable it seems, so if her kid died, I think she's go to the point of no return, really. She was so on the edge with him just missing!

I do agree and don't know if Joyce would be able to cope with the loss or her son. Or maybe she was so crazy because she knew he wasn't really gone? Maybe if she really thought he was dead she could move forward with the grief process and eventually come out the other side still sane.
