Is it right what the NFL is doing to Las Vegas?

I was originaly going to post this on the NFL discussion thread, but I think that this needs to be it's own discussion topic. If I'm wrong, please move this post over, before closing this thread.

The NFL is screwing with us in Las Vegas.

Yesterday (Friday, Jan 30) the NFL sent letters out to a lot of the casinos in Las Vegas, stating that no casino in town can show the game on any TV over 55 inches. Three days before the Superbowl! A lot of the casinos had to cancel their Superbowl parties, and refund the money. George Maloof (the owner of the Palms hotel/casino, and the Sacramento Kings) purchased like 155 plasma TV's so that they could still have their party.

I think that the NFL is full of crap. First they wouldn't let Las Vegas air a comercial during the Superbowl, because they don't want to be associated with gambling, and now this? What the hell does the NFL have against this city?

You should've heard Mayor Oscar Goodman go off on the NFL, on the radio and TV, yesterday. He was asking if the NFL was enforcing that rule all over the country, or just in Las Vegas. I'd really like an answer to that. Is Atlantic City being held to the same standard? How about Branson? Or the riverboat casinos? The Indian casinos? Or how about places that don't have gaming? If not, then I think the city of Las Vegas may be able to sue. And since our mayor used to be a mob lawyer, he'd do something like that.

I don't think that it's right. The MGM Grand agrees with me. The news stated that their attorneys are carefully reviewing the copyright laws, but currently have no plans to cancel their Superbowl party.

How do you guys feel about this? Does anyone else think that the NFL is biting off their nose, to spite their face? I think that all the NFL is doing, is aleniating the fans. The same ones who buy NFL tickets and merchandise.

Yeah, i think it's total crap. I work on a riverboat and we have smaller plasma's up, but also a huge big back screen and the game will still be televised on all our screens.

I think it is ridiclous that the NFL is doing this just to set some sort of moral example. I didn`t hear about them having problems with game parties in Vegas during the season. All this is a PR disaster for them, which will alienate the fans in Vegas and the high rollers, who could be potential buyers of those luxuary boxes.

This is the craziest thing I've ever heard! What's wrong with showing the game on TVs bigger than 55 inches?? And how can the NFL go after Vegas (the biggest gambling city in America), when alot of the NFL's popularity and success stems from gambling (ie. NFL office pools, and the Superbowl being the biggest betting days of the year).

I have to question the NFL’s legal authority on this one. Of course, they own rights to the game and can establish where their games will be broadcasted. But, laying the smack down on the size of the device transmitting their product?!!!! That’s a little ridiculous. Don’t you think? It’s obvious that the NFL is singling out Las Vegas, which is dumb considering that A LOT of their revenue comes from the extraordinary interest the Super Bowl gets from gambling.
